CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I
SUMMARY:
Positions in these classes perform basic technical tasks in support of a variety of engineering work.
Duties include gathering, processing and dissemination technical information related to the City's
transportation system or utilities. Tasks are routine in nature and follow straight-forward procedures
established by departmental standard operating procedures and guides. The position requires basic
arithmetic calculations, making counts, compiling data, maintaining files and records, charting
information and general office related tasks as required. Decisions and problems are under the direct
review of an Engineer in a higher classification. However, problem solving and the provision of
information may involve staff in other departments, the public, and superiors with which there is
substantial contact. Therefore, the position requires the incumbent to be able to communicate
technical data to engineers or non-technical persons.
SCOPE:
Reports to: Engineering Manager or Senior Engineering Technician
Independently performs basic technical tasks of a routine nature in support of engineering activities.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Positions in the Engineering Technician I class are entry-level positions performing primarily
routine work such as the collection of data. Incumbents work under close supervision until they gain
sufficient knowledge and experience to perform recurring tasks with minimal supervision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily indoors likely using a computer and requiring the incumbent to sit for
long periods.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Maintains records pertaining to utility and other public works installations; updates maps;
accesses computerized cross-referencing of records.
• Researches records to determine property ownership and obtain other relevant information.
• Provides information and responds to inquiries from contractors, property owners, City sta
