COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE HURRICANE IKE BUILD-BACK
Library Books Reinstallation
Beginning December 5, 2008, the Jenkin’s Architecture & Art Library located in the Gerald
D. Hines College of Architecture, prepared for the return of nearly 110,000 library books and journals
which were displaced due to the effects of Hurricane Ike. Thousands of volumes (including 10,000
rare books) were affected when the copper roof was ripped apart and partially destroyed back in
September. The books have been temporarily relocated to two different locations, including one off-
campus storage facility. This three-phase book reinstallation is scheduled to be complete by January
20, 2009. Hurricane build-back work also includes new carpeting, shelf cleaning, painting, and book
case inspections.
A number of companies are involved in the College of Architecture’s Hurricane Ike Recovery
including Basic Industries, ASC Flooring, A-1 Freeman, Innovative Office Designs, JonMar Electric,
RL Sheetrock, and the University of Houston’s Fire Alarm Shop and the Recycling Shop.
For more information about the project, contact Ken Oliver, project manager in Facilities
Planning and Construction, at 713-743-5602.
