What is Cancer?
Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolledgrowth and spread of abnormal cells. If the spread is not controlled,it can result in death. Cancer is caused by externalfactors, such as tobacco, infectious organisms, and an unhealthydiet, and internal factors, such as inherited genetic mutations, hormones, and immune conditions. These factors may acttogether or in sequence to cause cancer. Ten or more years oftenpass between exposure to external factors and detectable cancer.Treatments include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormonetherapy, immune therapy, and targeted therapy (drugs that specificallyinterfere with cancer cell growth).
For over 100 years, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has worked relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer. Together with millions of our supporters worldwide, we help people stay well and get well, find cures, and fight back against cancer.
