VOTED ‘LARGE HOTEL OF THE YEAR 2008’
IN THE TOURISM OSCARS
The newly refurbished St George’s Hall, Liverpool was the glittering venue for
the 2008 Enjoy England Awards for Excellence, in which Chewton Glen
received the gold award as ‘Large Hotel of the Year’, at a ceremony attended
by over 400 guests in the European City of Culture on St George’s Day,
Wednesday 23rd April 2008. Now in their 19th year, these awards promote
healthy industry competition and high standards, helping to ensure England’s
place as a world-class destination.
“The Enjoy England Awards for Excellence are the highest accolade in
English Tourism and we are thrilled to have received this award. It is the staff
that makes the difference between a good hotel and a great hotel, and it is for
them, their attention to detail and their pride in their work, that I accept this
prestigious award”, said Andrew Stembridge, Managing Director of Chewton
Glen, at the award ceremony on Wednesday night.

As regional finalists the hotel was entered for these prestigious national
awards, which are judged by a panel of independent industry experts. The
awards, hosted by actor and producer Ben Miller, are particularly important as
they represent the essence of good hospitality and take into consideration
criteria such as; high quality accommodation, customer service,
housekeeping, excellent dining experience and meeting guests’ needs; and it
is very refreshing to be judged on these traditional qualities.
It is very positive that these awards recognise the best of the English tourist
industry covering numerous categories from sustainable tourism, visitor
attractions, business tourism to the more recognisable categories of guest
accommodation and outstanding customer service.
