Long ago when our Bible story happened, Jesus said “I tell you the
truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what
she has done will be told, in memory of her.” He was talking about
our Bible story today. Now I will tell it to you, in memory and honor
of Mary and her good deed for Jesus.
A few days before the Passover festival, Jesus was having dinner with
some friends and his disciples in the town of Bethany. While Jesus
was reclining at the table, Mary broke open a jar of very expensive
perfume. It was worth more than 300 denarii. You would have to
work for one whole year to make that much money! Today it would
cost thousands of dollars. Twenty, 30 or even 50 thousand dollars for
that one jar of perfume. She poured the perfume on the head and feet
of Jesus. She used her hair to wipe his feet dry. The whole house was
filled with the sweet fragrance of the perfume.
