DuPont™ Corian® stands the test of time
at Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel in Oslo, Norway
June 2005 - Situated in the heart of Oslo, the Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel welcomes
hundreds of guests through its doors every day. Causing a sensation when it was built in 1975,
its interior has been renovated over the years to ensure that it meets the high standards expected
of a first class hotel.
When the hotel’s bathrooms needed to be refurbished 15 years ago, Radisson SAS decided to
use DuPont™ Corian® - despite it being relatively new to the Norwegian market – believing
that the material’s durability and easy care would justify the investment.
In addition to these benefits, the final decision to buy Corian®, according to Radisson SAS
Technical Director Jørgen Breum, was down to the material’s renewability. The hotel therefore
renovated its 488 bathrooms in Corian® Cameo White, commissioning fabricator Corinor A/S
for all design, production and installation work.
Fifteen years on, the time has come for another renovation of the hotel’s bathrooms. By re-
using, polishing and re-installing the same Corian®, the bathrooms have been given an overhaul
at minimum expense. Breum says: "We have calculated that the cost of renovating and re-using
the vanity tops in Corian® will be around a quarter of the price of a new vanity top. Corian®
has therefore proved itself as a profitable investment over time."
In each of the 144 bathrooms renovated so far, a new, light-coloured floor has been laid, and the
vanity top given a new satin finish. The high backsplash in Corian® has been decorated with a
thin stripe of mosaic tiles, laid in a routed track. As before, this coved backsplash is visibly
seamless, allowing easy cleaning of the bathroom.
Invented by Research & Development laboratories of DuPont and produced only by DuPont,
Corian® (<www.corian.com>) is used in a wide range of residential, commercial, furniture and
specialty applications. It is a non-porous solid surface material
