PRESS RELEASE Tuesday 22nd September 2009 Daresbury SIC wins ‘Outstanding Science Park’ award Daresbury Science & Innovation Campus (Daresbury SIC) won a prestigious United Kingdom Science Park Association (UKSPA) Award on 17th September at a glittering award ceremony in the Museum of Science & Industry, Manchester. The Daresbury Campus was recognised as the Outstanding Science Park of 2009 – an award for the Science Park seen to be ‘setting the pace’ and making the most significant contribution to the exploitation of the knowledge base. The award was presented to the Science Park most able to demonstrate that it provides an environment in which it is possible to provide access to new markets, contribute to technology development, assist with research linkages, provide access to capital networks and finance, provide sources of competitive advantage, enhance supply and distribution networks and increase on-park business to business interactions. The Campus was cited for being consistently forward thinking in its use of networking, which includes its hugely successful business breakfast events and the rapid development of its network membership which has grown to more than 2,000 individual members in a little over three years. With an initial £50m investment from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), Daresbury SIC was established to help drive regional and national competitiveness in science and innovation, and is one of only two Government-funded science and innovation campuses in the UK; other key stakeholders are the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Halton Borough Council and the universities of Lancaster, Liverpool and Manchester. Daresbury SIC is now seen as a major driver of the regional economy, with over £20m of investment being secured to date by the Campus’ tenant companies. Hosting a delegation of UKSPA members at a tour of the Daresbury site on the day after the awards ceremony, Daresbury SIC General Manager, John Leake said: “We’re delighted to have our activities acknowledged nationally through this award, especially as it revolves around the importance of collaborative networks, which are what make Daresbury SIC so effective. Our tenant companies, which include some of the UK’s most innovative young businesses, enjoy unrivalled support and access to knowledge on Campus and although we live and breathe the importance of networks every day here, it’s fantastic to have that commitment celebrated publicly.” Director of Science and Innovation at the NWDA, George Baxter, said: “The Agency with our partners have provided a comprehensive and proactive response to the demand for high technology locations. We now have a future hub, recognised by the government and business, for world-leading science. This award acknowledges the Agency’s investment and highlights just how far the Campus has come in the past decade through the hard work of all partners.” Deputy Chief Executive of STFC, Colin Whitehouse, added: “I am delighted that Daresbury SIC has been recognised with this prestigious award. This award confirms the Campus’ position as a UK and world-leading location for innovative, high impact science. This excellent news comes at a very exciting time for Daresbury SIC as we look for a private sector partner to help us build further upon this success and ensure that the future critical mass of Daresbury, as a hub for scientific research and high-tech businesses, goes from strength to strength”. The Campus is now moving into its next exciting phase of delivering world class science and high-tech businesses. It is now in the process of identifying a private sector partner to develop up to 1 million square feet of space for business, research and innovation, providing facilities management and other services to the Campus and realising commercial services and investment opportunities with the Campus companies. The process will see the Campus' public sector stakeholders - the NWDA, STFC and Halton Borough Council - enter a joint venture with the private sector business or consortium. This will continue to bring together businesses, universities, research organisations and industrial partners with the business support and investor community, to create up to 10,000 jobs. It is expected that the partner will be selected early in 2010 with the joint venture company in place in second quarter of 2010. - ENDS – - Picture attached: the award winning Daresbury SIC Ltd Team with the award L-R Mark Blackburn, Pauline Sallis, Stephanie Frobisher, John Leake, Perfecta Gainsbury, Kathryn Smart, Joanne Nugent, Paul Treloar Notes to Editors Images Additional hi-res jpeg images of the winning team and of the Campus are available on request from Smith & Smith PR.
