Executive Summary: This Charrette will kick-start projects, accelerating the
adoption of new fuel-efficient technologies, infrastructure, and practices.
This pre-read prepares Charrette participants by providing information about the event and research of the
topic of doubling efficiency in the trucking industry. RMI defines trucking efficiency as the optimization of
four elements: fuel economy, cargo capacity, operations, and infrastructure. In this document one will find
an overview of RMI’s research, industry case-studies, and expert interviews; an overview of the charrette
process and what to expect when you arrive; and an appendix of helpful industry facts to have as
background information for participating in the charrette.
Transformational Trucking is an initiative to achieve doubled-efficiency in long-haul domestic freight
transport. RMI has spent years surveying, modeling, and analyzing the market status and potential in the
freight trucking industry—the second greatest user of petroleum products in the United States (consuming

of trucking in the most cost-effective way. This includes an understanding of:
• hardware and platform improvement;
• logistics and operations excellence;
• policies and regulations; and
• business constraints and capital funding.
Success of the Transformational Trucking initiative requires unconventional and creative collaboration
