Conservation on the Ground –
Conservation Tillage Workshop Held in Andalusia
By Richard Collier, Wiregrass RC&D Coordinator, Ozark, AL
The Wiregrass and Gulf Coast
RC&D Councils, along with the
Covington County Soil and Water
Conservation District, hosted a two-
day Conservation Tillage Workshop
February 14-15, 2006, at the
Kiwanis Community Center in
Andalusia, Alabama. Commenting
about the workshop, State
Conservationist Gary Kobylski said,
“Increases in the use of no-till
systems by Alabama farmers have
led to many benefits, both direct
and indirect. These include
reductions in erosion, and savings
of time, labor, fuel and machinery.
We want to share that information
with more producers.”
Ben Moore, NRCS Agronomist, talks about conservation
tillage equipment.
Approximately 55 individuals participated in the workshop. Topics covered included
cover crop, weed, and fertility management. Additional topics included soil compaction,
water conservation, equipment, and farm programs. A field demonstration and
equipment displays were also a part of the workshop.
