Do Your Skills Match Your Ambitions?
The Basic Skills Survey is an assessment that helps students measure their current level of proficiency in
10 fields. These areas are Reading Comprehension, Active Listening, Writing, Speaking, Mathematics, Science,
Critical Thinking, Active Learning, Learning Strategies and Monitoring.
In each of the 10 domains cited above, a series of statements describing increasingly difficult tasks are listed.
Students respond to the statements by selecting those that they are able to perform at the present moment.
When the survey has been completed, the students' results appear in graph form and their proficiency level in
each category is ranked numerically -- a score of one to 10, one being the lowest and 10 the highest.
Students will learn which careers require the levels of proficiency that most closely match their survey results
and how their current proficiency levels measure up when compared to a career of their choosing.
It is unlikely, of course, that students already possess the degree of skill required for the careers they aspire to.
They will, however, gain an understanding of the skill levels expected of candidates for such careers.
