Average Energy Prices, Baltimore-Columbia-Towson – November 2021
Gasoline prices averaged $3.422 a gallon in the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson area in November 2021, the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Alexandra Hall Bovee noted that area
gasoline prices were up 53.9 percent compared to last November when they averaged $2.223 per gallon.
Baltimore area households paid an average of 13.7 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity in November
2021, up from 9.6 percent per kWh in November 2020. The average cost of utility (piped) gas at $1.597 per
therm in November was up from $1.413 per therm a year earlier. (Data in this release are not seasonally
adjusted; accordingly, over-the-year-analysis is used throughout.)
At $3.422 a gallon, costs for gasoline in the Baltimore area were 4.3 percent below the national average of
$3.576 a gallon in November 2021. Last November, gasoline prices in Baltimore were similar to the nation.
Over the prior three Novembers, prices for a gallon of gasoline in Baltimore have been below the U.S. average
by 9.3 percent or less. (See chart 1.)
The 13.7 cents per kWh that Baltimore households paid for electricity in November 2021 was 3.5 percent
lower than the nationwide average cost of 14.2 cents per kWh. Last November, electricity costs in Baltimore
were 8.1 percent lower than the nation. Over the prior three Novembers, prices for electricity in Baltimore
have been below the U.S. average by 7.5 percent or less. (See chart 2.)
Prices paid by Baltimore area consumers for utility (piped) gas, commonly referred to as natural gas, were
$1.597 per therm in November 2021, 14.0 percent above the national average of $1.401 per therm. Utility
