Dear Ms. Sauders,
Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your 2009-2010 Request for Information. Charter One, a
division of RBS Citizens, N.A., has over 25 years experience in the student loan industry, and we
believe making education possible is a vital part of our commitment to the community. Our presence in
both banking and the student loan industry can be seen through the following credentials:
• Michael McFarlane, Director of Education Finance for Charter One, is Chair of the Consumer
Bankers Association Education Funding Committee.
• We are a full member of ELM Resources and Michael McFarlane, Director of Education Finance,
is a member of their Board of Directors.
• Our Everyday Student BankingTM program provides complimentary tuition insurance protection
(up to $5,000 annually) with every free student checking account. Students do not need to
have their student loans with Charter One to take advantage of our banking products.
• Through our “Gear for Grades” program, Charter One annually purchases more than 25,000
backpacks, which are then stuffed with donated school supplies. The backpacks are distributed
to underprivileged children in community organizations, the foster care system, and after-
school programs.
Our experience, personalized service and commitment to the student loan industry during these
tumultuous times is proof that Charter One is the best choice to be your educated resource and trusted
industry advocate. If there are areas we must address differently to meet your institution’s needs, we
are prepared and willing to do so. Please do not hesitate to contact us at 1-800-721-3969 with any
questions.
Sincerely,
Shelly Johnson
