“I have the honor to announce, on behalf of the Court, that the Octo-
ber 2018 Term of the Supreme Court of the United States is now
closed, and the October 2019 Term is now convened.
“Justice Thomas is unable to be present today. He is indisposed due
to illness, but he will participate in the consideration and decision of
the cases on the basis of the briefs and the transcripts or recordings of
the oral arguments.
“Today's orders of the Court have been duly entered and certifed,
and fled with the Clerk.
“I would like to note that August 3, 2019, marked the 25th Anniver-
sary of the day our colleague Justice Breyer took the Judicial and Con-
stitutional Oaths as a new Member of this Court. On behalf of the
Court, I congratulate you, Justice Breyer, on your distinguished serv-
ice, and I look forward to sharing many more years with you in our
“I also want take a moment to pay tribute to our friend and colleague
John Paul Stevens, a retired Justice of this Court, who died on July 16,
2019. Justice Stevens was nominated to the Court by President Ford
on November 28, 1975, and was confrmed by the Senate less than 20
days later. He was an active Member of the Court for more than 34
years. At the time of his retirement on June 29, 2010, Justice Stevens
had become the third-longest serving Justice in the history of the
“Justice Stevens devoted his life to public service. He was a commis-
sioned offcer in the United States Navy from 1941-1945, receiving a
Bronze Star for his service. During the 1947 Term he was a law clerk
to Justice Wiley Rutledge of this Court. Before joining this Court,
Justice Stevens served fve years on the United States Court of Ap-
peals for the Seventh Circuit.
