Universe Description
The universe is all business establishments with one or more paid employees. The series excludes data on self-
employed individuals, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production
employees, and most government employees. Data for 1998-2000 are tabulated by industry as defined in the
North American Industry Classification System (NAICS): United States, 1997. Data for the 1984-1987 County
Business Patterns are tabulated by kinds-of-business categories based on the 1972 edition of the Standard
Industrial Classific
