The Elior Group wins a milestone contract in Florida
The Elior Group – the third-largest player in the European contracted foodservice and
related services market – has signed a major contract in the motorways market for the
second largest toll road in the United States, Florida’s Turnpike.
Áreas, an Elior subsidiary specialised in Concession Catering in Spain, has won the contract for
Florida’s Turnpike, under which it will manage eight large motorway service areas offering catering,
hospitality and retail services, as well as the sale of fuel.
The concession agreement is for a thirty-year period and covers the running of 72 retail outlets. It
is expected to generate aggregate sales of $4.5 billion and lead to the creation of 800 jobs. The
buildings make up a total surface area of 15,000 sq.m, and $90 million have been earmarked for
construction and renovation works. Opened in 1957, Florida’s Turnpike runs through the whole of
Florida, from Miami to North Orlando (running parallel to the I-75), crossing 11 counties and
covering a distance of over 736 km. More than 1.8 million people use the road every day.
From 3 June 2009, Áreas will offer the road’s users a wide range of both international and local
brands, including Dunkin Donuts, KFC, Taco Bell, Long John Silver’s, Cheeburger Cheeburger,
Villa Pizza, Panda Express, Jamba Juice and Vicky’s Bakery – at some 41 restaurants. At the
same time, Áreas will manage a total of 31 shops, sporting brand names such as Florida Sunshine
Marketplace, Citrus Delites and Captain Jack’s.
Winning the contract for managing one of the largest motorways in the United States is testimony
to Elior’s successful business strategy in North America and will extend the Group’s reach in the
United States, where it is already present in seven airports through Áreas. Robert Zolade,
Chairman of the Elior Group, said: “We are particularly proud of our Áreas teams who won this bid.
It marks our entry into the US motorways marke
