The six-course certificate programs
have been developed to meet the
professional development needs of
Para educators, job coaches, adult
service providers who are direct care
staff, parents, and community members
who work or provide services to
students and adults with disabilities.
These courses will also benefit class-
room teachers, college students,
grandparents and family members, as
well as community advocates working
on behalf of raising awareness and
improving services for students and
adults with disabilities.
The six-course sequence consists of
three disability related foundation
courses and three specialty track
courses. While the initial certificate
program focuses on autism, a number
of additional specialty tracks are
envisioned including Inclusion in the
school and community, Transition
services, Mental Health, Learning
Disabilities, and Job Coaching/Em-
Each course is 15 hours in length and
meets from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at a
cost of $120. Payment must be made
in full upon registration.
Participants can either elect to take all
six courses to obtain a Certificate of
Completion or take any individual
course(s) based on interest or need.

Overview of Disabilities and Related Legislation and Laws (15 hours)
This course introduces learners to the spectrum of disability classifications within the medical and
education models. Gain knowledge of the many disability related legislations including IDEIA, ADA,
NCLB, and Section 504 of the Rehab Act, FRPA, and HIPA Laws and an understanding of the
differences in laws and legislations for school age children and for adult with disabilities.
