Surgery for Sizemore
Grady Sizemore will have
surgery on his left knee next
week and is expected to miss
at least six to eight weeks.
Cleveland’s three-time All-Star
has a deep bone bruise in the
knee he injured May 16. The
condition and stability of the
cartilage beneath his kneecap
will be assessed during the
arthroscopic operation by
Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail,
Colo. The surgery hasn’t been
scheduled yet, though it is
planned for some time next
week.

Zambrano to start again
Carlos Zambrano will return
to the Chicago Cubs’ starting
rotation Wednesday at
Pittsburgh. Cubs manager
Lou Piniella announced the
move before Sunday’s game
against St. Louis. Zambrano
will replace left-hander Tom
Gorzelanny, who will move
to the bullpen for relief duty.
Zambrano is 1-3 with a 6.12
ERA, and just 1-2 in four starts
with a 7.45 ERA. He joined the
bullpen on April 22. The Cubs
also plan to call up highly
touted right-hander Andrew
Cashner from Triple-A Iowa.

Woman debuts as pro
Eri Yoshida bounced off the
mound with a smile, looking
every bit like an 18-year-old
who was enjoying a new
country. It was
what she did
on the pitcher’s
mound — and
in the batter’s
box — that set
Yoshida apart.
The “Knuckle
Princess” pitched
a scoreless first
inning (before later allowing
four runs in two innings) and
had an RBI single Saturday
for the independent Chico
Outlaws of the Golden
Baseball League.
