Dedication: Alfred Knappe was an active competitor in Germany before coming to Canada in 1955.
He began coaching at the UNB fencing club in 1966, was founder of and served as first President of the
New Brunswick Fencing Association from 1969 to 1972. Over the years Alfred has been known to
several generations of fencers as a dedicated, hard-working builder of the sport of fencing.
Alfred Knappe Team Trophy: This impressive trophy, donated by Alfred Knappe in 1973, is awarded
to the winning club in the open category and presented by Alfred Knappe.
Three weapon format: Teams are comprised of one foilist, one epeeist & one sabreur with any
combination of male & female competitors or exclusive of either. Clubs are encouraged to submit
representative teams. If a club cannot field a full team, fencers from another club may be added. Each
bout is fenced to multiples of five hits or 3 minutes with the score accumulating to a maximum of 45
hits. If there are more than seven teams in an event, they will be divided into two pools. The winner of
each pool will fence for first place & the teams placing second in pools will fence for third place.
