Conservation on the Ground –
Dryden’s Mill Campsite Dedicated
The Dryden’s Mill Campsite on Alabama 448, off
Cleburne County Road 49 was recently dedicated. The
campsite gives people who want to enjoy the
Tallapoosa River a place to stop and rest or set up
camp for the night. Dryden’s Mill Campsite is a part of
the Loyd Owens Canoe Trail.
The Loyd Owens Canoe Trail meanders along the 40
miles of the Tallapoosa River from the Georgia state line
to Highway 431 in the southern part of the Cleburne
County. The U.S. Department of Interior has
designated this stretch of the river as the cleanest river
in the Eastern United States. The river teems with fish,
including rare species, ducks, and other wildlife.
The trail bears the name of Loyd Owens because of the
work he did to get funding for boat ramps and campsites
