for Cincinnati Bell
Cincinnati Bell is more than just a communications company. In addition to
traditional landline service, the company maintains an advantage over its larger
telecom competitors by continually expanding its range of services, including
wireless, wi-fi, broadband Internet and ISP service, data communications, and
video/entertainment. Cincinnati Bell serves the Cincinnati, Ohio metro area,
including northern Kentucky, southern Ohio, and southeastern Indiana. Some
of its services extend to the Dayton area and reach as far as Chicago and
Indianapolis. The company prides itself on leveraging data and convergence
technologies to provide customers with the greatest value.
Cincinnati Bell wanted to go beyond assumptions and manual processes for
determining network bandwidth performance for its customers. The company
was using an open source application that gave customers a limited view of
bandwidth usage data. However, as more customers began using this option
and asking for additional capabilities, Cincinnati Bell realized that its existing
open source application could not be easily customized to meet those demands.
“In light of those challenges, we decided to broaden our scope beyond open
source and see what automated monitoring applications were available in
the market,” says Kurt Lombardi, Senior Manager of Network Management
Systems at Cincinnati Bell. “We envisioned creating a customer portal with
a layer of security, and we wanted a solution that would help us understand
the type of errors or issues our customers might be seeing on their lines.
Ultimately, we wanted to provide our customers with superior quality data
services and the best value possible.
