August heat…you learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron!
We are proud to welcome our new Strawberry Breeder to
Gulf Coast REC! Vance M. Whitaker is a recent graduate of
the University of Minnesota with a PhD in Plant Breeding and
Genetics. His doctoral dissertation was Genetic Analyses of
Disease Resistance in Rose. Though his research as a
PostDoctoral Fellow at the University of Minnesota was
primarily on fungal disease of rose, his expertise,
enthusiasm, and past cooperative, collaborative efforts and
past achievements have shown him to be a promising
scientist for maintaining the excellent strawberry breeding
program Dr. Craig Chandler has developed at GCREC. Dr.
Chandler will be retiring in 2010.
Originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, Vance brings
with him a wife, Terri, and two children, Isaac (3 yrs) and
Claire (1-1/2 yrs). We look forward to sharing in his promising
future as strawberry breeder.

Congratulations, Dr. Craig Chandler!
It‟s no surprise that Craig Chandler has garnered yet another
award for his excellence in strawberry research. In August, the
Plant City Chamber of Commerce will present Craig with the 2009
Agriculturist of the Year Award. In 1987 Craig took the position of
Strawberry Breeder at the Gulf Coast Research and Education
Center in Dover where he began his rise to recognition both
nationally and internationally for his breeding and genetics
research on strawberries. He has developed popular cultivars
such as „Sweet Charlie‟, „Carmine‟, and „Strawberry Festival‟ that
have added millions of dollars
