CASE STUDY: Playfish
Playfish is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing social games companies and
was recently acquired by console gaming giant Electronic Arts. Playfish titles, including
Pet Society, Restaurant City and Hotel City, are among the most popular games on
Facebook and MySpace̶with a combined total of over 50M monthly users. As a leader
in the social gaming industry with a long-term view of the market, Playfish was looking
for innovative new ways to monetize players and enhance the user experience.
In 2008, Playfish began a partnership with
TrialPay, the leading payment platform in
the virtual currency space, to turn price-
sensitive gamers into paying customers
through targeted, real-world promotions.
Playfish chose TrialPay over competing
platforms because of their shared
commitment to a sustainable revenue
model and an enjoyable user experience.
Almost two years later, TrialPay’s offer-
based payment platform has earned
Playfish millions of dollars through several
of its top titles.
In Februrary 2010, Playfish launched its annual in-game Valentine’s Day promotion with
TrialPay in one of its most popular games, Pet Society. The promotion offered players
free virtual currency in exchange for purchasing flowers through ProFlowers. In just two
weeks, Playfish sold tens of thousands of real bouquets, which accounted for half of
the revenue the game generated during this period. These real-world sales awarded
enough virtual currency to purchase 60 million virtual goods within the game.
“We work with TrialPay in a way that benefits users,” said Sebastien de Halleux, Playfish’s
COO. “On Valentine’s Day, for example, people could buy real or virtual flowers through
our games; that’s a benefit.”
Playfish is one of the world’s leading social
game developers, with more than 200 million
game installs and 1 billion monthly game
