Wireless in Rooms
Laptop Optimisation
Remove Old Profiles
Remove old profiles for Wireless LANs that you no longer use. Your computer will regu-
larly scan through the list of preferred networks, reducing performance and taking longer
to connect to your preferred network
Disable Ad-hoc mode
Ad-hoc mode is used for linking computers to other computers rather than to networks
and can cause poor performance and unnecessary interference. You should use the
‘Advanced Settings’ to set you laptop to only connect to Access Points / Infrastructure
networks.
Wireless Access In Rooms
There is currently no wireless internet access available from guest rooms. You are
advised to turn your off your wireless adapter while in your room to avoid connecting
automatically to any unauthorised wireless networks.
Upgrade WLAN Drivers
There are fixes and new features in drivers that improve reception, performance and
reduce power consumption. The latest drivers from your wireless card manufacturer will
probably reduce connection time and improve stability.

Wireless Network Coverage
Wireless coverage is available in the James Watt Centre and parts of the Hugh Nisbet
building and uses the SSID eccnet. The system is based on the popular WiFi or
802.11b standard, enabling the vast majority of laptop or notebook computers to con-
nect easily and use the service.
In order to access the network you will need an 802.11b/g WLAN Network Card.
These are built into most new laptops, but aftermarket cards are available from all good
computer stores.
