POSITION DESCRIPTION
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT SERVICES DIRECTOR
NATURE OF WORK:
Under the direction of the City Manager, the Director of Community Development Services
plans, organizes and directs the activities of the Community Development Department including
Current Planning, Building Services, and Parks and Recreation Services. The Director is
responsible for the development, recommendation and implementation of policies, programs and
procedures that accomplish the goals and objectives of the department. The Director assists city
manager services with policy and legislative research and analysis related to planning and
community development and participates as a member of the City management team to assist in
planning, organizing and implementing goals, objectives and policies to achieve the Burien
Vision. (This is an exempt position under FLSA regulations.)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates short and long-range projects related to
comprehensive and current planning, zoning, subdivision activities, environmental analysis and
reporting.
Directs the day-to-day zoning, subdivision, environmental, shoreline, and building
administration activities.
Initiates and directs the department efforts in the areas of comprehensive plan revisions,
ordinance and resolution preparation, program and project plans.
Serves as the City’s State Environmental Policy Act official and Shoreline Management Official
to ensure the City’s compliance with state law requirements.
Prepares, presents, and administers the Department budget.
Directs, plans, and organizes the operations of the parks and recreation division and the building
permit division.
