Contract No. 6278A Amendment: St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County
for Mattress Hauling and Recycling Services
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a Resolution authorizing the City Manager to execute an amendment to Contract
No. 6278A with St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County, Inc. to haul and recycle
mattresses from the Berkeley Transfer Station, increasing the amount by $240,000 for a
total amount not to exceed $578,000, and extending the term an additional 32 months
to include the period February 1, 2004 through June 30, 2011.
FISCAL IMPACTS OF RECOMMENDATION
The annual cost of this agreement is approximately $90,000 and in FY 2009 there is
$60,000 available in the Refuse Fund account 820-5608-432-3038 which will cover the
remaining eight months of the Fiscal Year. The City will pay St. Vincent de Paul of Lane
County, Inc. $6 per mattress to remove mattresses from the transfer station and $138
per trailer load for transportation off the site. The Transfer Station Tipping Fee for
incoming mattresses of $12.00/mattress offsets expenses related to this contract. The
allocations for the additional contract years will be allocated annually in the Refuse
Fund budget. The CMS number is JAS86.
CURRENT SITUATION AND ITS EFFECT
St. Vincent de Paul recycles approximately 10,000 mattresses per year from the City’s
transfer station. With the average queen size mattress weighing approximately 63
pounds, this translates into 315 tons per year diverted from landfill. St. Vincent De
Paul’s current contract expires October 31, 2008.
