TradeSim Futures Trading Simulator
TradeSim is an online trading simulator supported by the University of Illinois.
TradeSim provides a simulated trading environment for those learning about futures and
options markets. Approximately 40 different commodities (many also trade options) are
available on TradeSim, including agricultural, currencies, energy, metals, and indices.
Users log into the system using an Internet browser with a user login and password
provided by the instructor. Trading will begin on January 26 and end on April 3. Each
of you will be provided with a login and password before that date. When trading
begins, your initial account balance will be $50,000. Necessary margins are assigned
for each futures trading contract (see “Browse Commodities” in TradeSim), and broker
fees are $50.00 per completed trade ($25.00 when the position is opened and $25
when the position is closed) for futures and $30.00 for buying or selling options.
Use the web site below to look over the TradeSim program. You can read more
detailed information about TradeSim, and even log in as a guest to see what is available
and how the program works. I encourage each of you to review TradeSim before
trading begins, and read the section “About TradeSim.” Then login as a guest and look
over what futures contracts can be traded and how orders are placed.
Be sure and read the syllabus concerning this trading exercise because your TradeSim
activities have an impact on your grade. Also, just a quick reminder that the final paper
for your TradeSim activities is due on April 16. Late papers are penalized per the
TradeSim web site: http://tradesim.agecon.uiuc.edu/index.html
