St. Mary’S
MatheMaticS and
coMputer Science Foundation
We had a bumper crop of math majors this
year, with 18 finishing their degrees. Emily
Oblath and Chelsea McCracken finished
off unusual double majors (chemistry and
French respectively).
A bunch of this year’s math grads are
heading off to graduate school, including
Heather Langdon, Kenny Salau, Karen
Farrell, and Katie Toman in mathematics,
Jeff Lee in physics, Chelsea McCracken in
linguistics, and Emily Oblath in chemistry.
Two students, Melissa Puzak and Kendra
Hildreth, will join SMCM’s new master’s program (M.A.T.) in education.
On the CS side, ten students graduated, several of whom are heading off to graduate school, including Adam Portier, Ade
Adeyokunnu, Tenny Salau, and Lance Kallon. Nicholas Heib will be joining the SMCM staff and working to improve the
Web sites. Finally, David Hickman and Luis Rodriguez-Cortes have landed defense industry jobs.
we write to keep you up to date about the happenings in the Mathematics and Computer
Science Department at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. And how busy we’ve been!
Every two years,
If you’ve visited us lately, you probably noticed two things: first, the Math/Computer Science wing of Schaefer Hall is as
lively as ever with great students and faculty hanging around everywhere. Second, there’s a giant new building going up just
outside our windows. We’re eagerly awaiting the opening of Goodpaster Hall in January 2008, when we’ll be able to stretch
out a bit in Schaefer. Expect more changes the next time you visit!
In case you missed it, the February issue of the St. Mary’s River Gazette featured the Math and CS Department.
The fantastic articles ranged from art and math, to short snippets of recent research, to busting myths about
mathematicians. Check it out online (Vol. 7, No. 2 at www.smcm.edu/rivergazette).
