The IFMR Capital-CRISIL Workshop on Securitisation for MFIs
IFMR Capital conducted a workshop ‘Securitisation of Microfinance ‘on the 15th
and 16th of December, 2009 at the IFMR Campus in Chennai. The workshop,
organised jointly with CRISIL , saw participation from 21 different Indian MFIs
with 26 industry executives understanding the various aspects of Microfinance
assets backed securitisation.
There were sessions covering topics such as accounting systems, securitisation
concepts and practice, legal aspects of securitisation, and investor relations.
Experts such as Mr. Prasad Koparkar, the head of the Structured Finance Ratings
Group at CRISIL, guided the participants through the entire process of
securitization from the very basics to issues like risks, structuring concepts,
tranching concepts, rating methodology, credit enhancement and investor
feedback.
Mr. Mukesh Gandhi, CFO MAS Financials said that the workshop helped him in
understanding the nuances of securitization, while Jugal Kataria CFO Satin
Creditcare said “securitization transactions will help financial institutions like
Satin to diversify its sources of funding by accessing the capital market and
enable them to offer micro-credit at reduced cost.” Such overwhelmingly positive
feedback from the participants on the sessions as well as the training materials
has strengthened IFMR Capital’s resolve to conduct more such workshops.
In the coming months workshops on diverse topics such as Risk Management and
Asset-Liability Management are set to be conducted in collaboration with CRISIL.

In the coming weeks, IFMR Capital’s website will be launched. The company’s aim is
to connect institutions that impact low income households with mainstream capital
markets and its website will embody the same core mission.
The highlight will be a microfinance deals portal that will be a comprehensive
to-the-minute reporter of market
