Social media marketing is improving by the month, and Facebook is leading the pack.
Facebook has nearly 2 billion users (as of October 2015). That’s a bunch of people to
market to. As a result, Facebook has put many resources into improving its ease of use for
marketers so they can easily target an audience.
Users on Facebook share their information not just with their friends but also with
Facebook. Facebook knows a user’s age, sex, location (permanent and temporary),
education, work history, hobbies, interests, friends, and more.
As an advertiser, you can use all this information to your benefit when running targeted ad
campaigns.
For example, an owner of a dance club asked me how to find people in the area who liked a
certain band from the 80’s because the band was going to be performing at his club.
That’s such a niche market to advertise to, but thanks to Facebook, he could find exactly
who satisfied these criteria. There is no other platform that would allow you to run a
search for these key terms and spit back worthwhile results.
We targeted an ad campaign on Facebook to approximately 20 people within a 50-mile
radius of the venue. Facebook made sure these people saw the ads for this event. Tickets to
the concert ended up selling out, and most of the attendees said they found out about the
event through Facebook (ads and the Fan Page).
For physical service businesses (dentists, restaurants, gyms, etc.), offers work very well.
These “flash deals” can be timely discounts or giveaways. In other words, you can create
your own Groupon type of deal through Facebook. You can offer coupons, free appetizers,
teeth whitening, one-week free gym memberships, etc. and target people in your area.
