SYLLABUS
Course Objective
This is a second-year graduate course in open economy macroeconomics. The lectures will
focus on developing a common analytical framework that can be used to think about real
world problems. Students are expected to develop a good grasp of both the analytical tools
and the relevant policy issues. It is important that students familiarize with the material
covered in class, the required readings and with current events by reading publications such
as the Economist and the Financial Times.
Resources available online
This syllabus is available online one the course web page. The online version of this outline

Course Requirements
There will be a three-hour final exam. Several problem sets will be distributed during the
course. These problem sets will deal with extensions and variations of the models developed
in class and should be viewed as integral part of the course. Solutions to the problem sets will
be posted online after their due date. To give students an incentive to work on the problem
sets as the course progresses, I will grade them with a “satisfactory” (S) or “unsatisfactory”
(U). Failure to turn the problem sets in time will automatically imply an U. The final grade
for the course will be the grade of the final exam adjusted down according to the number of
U’s.
Lectures
Lectures are a supplement for the readings. Lectures are designed to cover the basic and most
fundamental issues and provide a foundation for the readings. It is essential that students
work their way throught the required readings as the course progresses. Students should
take advantage of office hours to clarify doub
