1. INTRODUCTION
The terms and conditions of employment for new Lecturer III positions are covered by the collective
bargaining agreement between the University and the Lecturers’ Employee Organization (“UM/LEO
Agreement”). However, there may be circumstances whereby a Lecturer III position is excluded from the
LEO Lecturer bargaining unit. These questions involve contract interpretation and application of
statutory and other authority. Please consult with the Dean’s Office (James T. Burkel, Senior Academic

applicability of the UM/LEO Agreement to a Lecturer III position you are requesting.
The LEO Lecturer III designation is a position title within the LEO Lecturer bargaining unit, and not a
promotional rank. This position requires instruction and significant ongoing administrative or service
duties within an academic unit, and/or requires a broad range of instructional expertise. This is
qualitatively different from a LEO Lecturer I/II position, which is primarily for the teaching of assigned
