Del Monte Foods’ Mendota Farm Operations Group Awarded OSHA Safety and Health Designation Mendota Farm Operations Recognized for Demonstrating World Class Safety Culture May 18, 2010 04:20 PM Eastern Daylight Time MENDOTA, Ill.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Del Monte Foods’ Mendota, IL Farm Operations group was recognized today by the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for its world class safety operations and culture. Del Monte’s Farm Operations group was awarded a Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Award Program (SHARP) designation, which is sponsored by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The SHARP award recognizes employers who operate an exemplary safety and health management system. As a result of the SHARP designation, Del Monte’s Farm Operations group will receive a two-year work site certification, which demonstrates OSHA’s confidence in the group’s safety operations. “Earning the OSHA SHARP designation is a great honor for everyone at Del Monte’s Mendota Farm Operation, and a direct reflection of our employees’ commitment to maintaining top-notch safety standards and world class safety culture,” said Scott Jamison, Director of Operations at Del Monte’s Mendota facility. “Our employees’ safety is our number one priority, and this achievement is a great validation of everyone’s hard work to develop and maintain the safest working environment possible.” In 2009, the Farm Operations management team, which includes both full-time and seasonal employees, demonstrated safety excellence by expanding its safety program to further emphasize all safety segments required by OSHA regulations, including: Hazard Anticipation and Detection, Hazard Prevention and Control, Planning and Evaluation, Administration and Supervision, Safety and Health Training, Management Leadership and Employee Participation. The team also set goals of zero recordable incidents and zero lost time days, achieving both since September 19, 2006. After an extensive audit by an OSHA consultation project manager, the Mendota Farm Operations group received its SHARP designation on February 1, 2010. To celebrate this achievement, a recognition ceremony was held today at the Mendota Civic Center, during which time OSHA representatives presented Del Monte’s Mendota Farm Operations leadership with the distinguished SHARP award. Del Monte’s Mendota vegetable processing plant was built in 1948. The Plant’s Farm Operation is responsible for contracting, planting, harvesting and delivering peas, sweet corn and lima beans to the Mendota plant. The Farm Operation’s workforce consists of 5 salaried and 11 regular hourly employees with a peak seasonal headcount of approximately 55 people. The group harvests vegetable crops from 177 separate growers within a 40 mile radius of Mendota, IL, and also from an early sourcing irrigated area in west central Illinois near Manito, IL.
