This role is key in helping us meet this commitment. The overall objective of the role is to prepare for publication a variety of qualification materials professionally, accurately, efficiently and on time. The role requires teamwork and liaison with colleagues across the company. Key Accountabilities: Outline main areas of responsibility 1) Quality To be familiar with, and operate within, Edexcel’s Quality Management System and PLU and Qualifications Development processes; maintaining positive, effective practices to maximise accuracy, economy and efficiency. Ensuring that documents meet the correct formats and house style. Checking documents for errors in terminology and consistency and ensuring that spellchecker is used for all documents. Working with the QED Manager on developing quality criteria and processes for the publication of Edexcel products. 2) Software Using software packages such as Microsoft, CS2/3 and Adobe. Taking responsibility for updating own skills and keeping keep up to date with developments in publishing software. Passing on, as required, knowledge of software packages and document production to colleagues. 3) Creativity Producing qualification materials efficiently and effectively to the required style and template using skills, knowledge, initiative and judgement. Accommodating changing demands in publication design and contributing to decisions about style, templates and other design features. Co-ordinating software programs, for example designing graphics using Illustrator and incorporating them into Word-based documents. Adapting and manipulating images. Producing CD ROMs of Edexcel materials using various programs, for example Dreamweaver, CSS. 4) Database and file management To manage electronic files in terms of housekeeping, archiving, and backing up. Updating the record and tracking database. 5) Time management Liaising with the QED Manager in managing and prioritising workload in order to meet PLU, Qualifications and Accreditation, business and regulator deadlines. Being flexible in order to meet tight deadlines and changing priorities. Working accurately under pressure. 6) Administration Using the QED Access database to log and track documents. Contributing to management information reports. Taking notes at team meetings. 7) Customer service Providing a friendly, customer-focused service. ‘Can do’ attitude. Giving help, advice and guidance on DTP and typesetting and other relevant publishing issues to colleagues across the company. Liaising with colleagues across the company. 8) Training and development Taking responsibility for keeping up to date with relevant IT developments and updating skills and knowledge as appropriate. Attending appropriate PLU and cross-company events, seminars etc in order to keep up to date with changes and developments in products and policies. Contributing to induction programmes for new staff. Sharing knowledge and skills with colleagues. Background Information: eg structure/size of the department; whether the team is new or fully established; number of direct reports; impact of new technology or other internal business factors; external factors, eg government policy decisions etc. The QED team is part of the Publishing and Logistics Unit in the Operations Division. The team has four DTP Specialists, an Onscreen Designer and an Editing Coordinator. They report to the QED Manager. The team’s core work is qualification and associated support materials for Qualifications Development. It also works on ‘non-core’ materials such as handbooks, leaflets, posters, onscreen tests and exams for departments across the business. PLU has two design teams working on different core deliverables. PLU has around 40 members of staff grouped into four teams. Key Challenges: eg managing during a period of rapid change; influencing senior management; transitioning from teaching into a commercial business environment; working to tight deadlines etc. Ensuring that all documents are produced to publishing standard. Working accurately under pressure to tight deadlines. Managing workload to meet tight and business-critical deadlines. Flexibility in carrying out tasks to meet changing priorities. Dealing with customers in a friendly and professional manner and developing positive and constructive working relationships with colleagues. Being innovative in terms of updating and improving the team’s working procedures. Helping to implement new technology. Working Pattern: Provide details of the working hours/pattern for the role. Start and finish times to be agreed with line manager. Flexible working is required when there are heavy workloads and tight deadlines to meet.
