Honor your planet with Earth Day events this month

Everyone likes to be appreciated.
Appreciation is a critical cog in the wheel of our society. It helps us drop our selfish viewpoints and recognize the good
around us. It feels good when someone gives you a hug and says, "Good job. Thanks for being around."
I like giving my mom a cheesy card on Mother's Day. But what would happen if someone canceled Mother's Day? Would
children suddenly stop loving their moms? If there were no day to honor administrative assistants, would people still smile
and greet each other in the reception area of your office? Appreciation is not limited to a date, time or location, but special
days to honor groups of people help highlight the good things in our lives and remind us of the wonders that surround us.
While many of us have mothers and administrative assistants to applaud, we all have one thing that deserves
appreciation. We are all inhabitants of one planet. As a resident of this rock orbiting the sun, it's time for everyone to take
time on Earth Day, April 22, to stop and say, "Hey Earth, good job. Thanks for being around."
There are many ways to give our good Earth a pat on the back this month. Start by respecting our island. Teach your kids,
family and neighbors to pick up their trash at the beach. Don't dump oil, pesticides or hazardous material into our water.
Work hard to have minimal impact when enjoying Guam's natural resources and beauty.
If you already do those things and want to step up your appreciation for the earth this month, the Guam Environmental
Protection Agency has big plans for April. The theme for Earth Week 2008! on Guam is "Conserve Our Reef Environment"
to coincide with the International Year of the Reef.
