Donating World War II-Related Objects and Documents The Chicago History Museum and World War II-Related Collections The Chicago History Museum does not collect material related to Chicagoans’ or other Americans’ service experiences in World War II. The only exceptions that will be considered for donation are materials related to servicemen and women while they were training or stationed in Chicago. The Museum does collect material that documents the home front experience in Chicago during World War II. If you wish to propose a donation of material please go to the Museum’s artifact donation web page: http://www.chicagohistory.org/research/artifactdonation Other Institutions that Collect World War II Material We recognize the importance of preserving the memories and experiences of World War II veterans and honoring their contributions. We suggest you visit the National World War II Memorial and Library of Congress Veterans History Project websites to learn how you can preserve these materials. The National World War II Memorial National World War II Memorial honors the sixteen million American men and women who served in the armed forces in World War II. For more information see: http://www.wwiimemorial.com/ You can add your family member to the World War II Registry online: http://www.wwiimemorial.com/default.asp?page=registry.asp&subpage=intro The Library of Congress Veterans History Project The focus of the Veterans History Project is on first-hand accounts of US veterans who served in World War I (1914–1920), World War II (1939–1946), the Korean War (1950–1955), the Vietnam War (1961–1975), the Persian Gulf War (1990–1995) or the Iraq-Afghanistan conflicts (2001– present). Those US citizen civilians who were actively involved in supporting war efforts (such as war industry workers, USO workers, flight instructors, medical volunteers, etc.) are also invited to share their stories. The project greatly values and appreciates veterans' stories from additional combat arenas and those received will be processed as resources allow. For more information on The Veterans History Project see: http://www.loc.gov/vets/ 1601 North Clark Street 312.642.4600 Chicago, IL 60614-6038 www.chicagohistory.org Chicago History Museum Donating World War II-Related Objects and Documents Alternative Repositories for World War II-Related Material For other repositories for World War II-related items please refer to the resources listed below or see: http://www.loc.gov/vets/relatedrepositories.html The following repositories also collect and preserve oral histories, memoirs, and other materials related to veterans and wartime experiences. This list is not exhaustive; there may be other institutions of interest to you. Please consider these as you decide where to donate your materials. In addition, housing your materials with others of a similar topic makes them more visible to researchers focused on that topic. Please contact individual institutions to learn more about their collecting policies and the kinds of materials they can or cannot accept before sending materials. The Veterans History Project, the American Folklife Center, and the Library of Congress can’t speak for the collecting policies of these institutions. Please note that in order to donate materials to a repository affiliated with a specific branch of service (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines) you must have served in that branch or have materials pertinent to that branch. A list of selected members of the Military Museums Consortium is also available for artifact donation inquiries. Please note: This contact information is subject to change.
