Update on the Dengue situation in the Western Pacific Region
Northern Hemisphere
Cambodia
As of 20 March 2018, a total of 247 suspected dengue cases have been reported in Cambodia in 2018.
In week 10 and 11, there were 209 and 247 new suspected dengue cases respectively. In week 10 and
11, the total number of reported dengue cases was similar to the three year-threshold (2015-2017)
over the same period (Figure 1).

China
As of 28 February 2018, a total of 16 dengue cases were reported in China. The number of reported
cases is consistent with trends of the same period observed between 2013 and 2017 (Figure 2).

Lao PDR
During week 10 of 2018, 24 dengue cases and no deaths were reported. Dengue is currently below
epidemic level and alert level, with low activity in line with seasonal trend (Figure 3).


Malaysia
In week 11, 2018, there were 1,079 dengue cases and two deaths reported. The number of cases
decreased by 6.4% compared to the previous week (Figure 4).

Philippines (no updates)
A total of 15,599 dengue cases were reported nationwide from 1 January to 24 February, 2018. This is
32.5% lower compared to the same period last year, in which 23,131 cases were reported.

Singapore
As of 17 March 2018, there were 39 dengue cases reported in Singapore. The number of cases remains
low and is consistent with trends of the previous year (Figure 6).

Viet Nam
As of 18 February 2018, there were 12,360 cases of dengue with one death reported in Viet Nam.
Compared to the same period in 2017 (19,437 cases and seven deaths), the cumulative number of cases
decreased by 36%. During week 11 (12 to 18 March), there were 895 cases from 39 out of 63 provinces,
with no deaths reported.

Southern Hemisphere
Australia
As of 28 March 2018, there were 162 cases of dengue virus infection reported in Australia. The number
of cases is lower than that reported during the same period in previous years (2013-2017) (Figure 8).

French Polynesia
In week 9 and 10, a total of 29 confirmed dengue cases were reported in 2018. Among these, 34.5% were
children under 15 years of age, and 23 cases (79.3%) were confirmed as DENV-1 infection.

New Caledonia
As of 26 March 2018, a total of 464 dengue cases were reported in 2018 (Figure 10). Among 385 subtyped
cases, 301 cases were confirmed as DENV-2 infection, 82 as DENV-1, and 2 as DENV-3. Twenty four cases
were hospitalized, and one death was reported on 15 March.
