Sneak peek:

"OK!" said Jenna, knowing neither of them would be able to go back to bed after this. "Let's see what's in the pantry.”

Jenna moved toward the cabinet. The light got brighter, and was that more smoke? Callie took a step back as she watched Jenna's hand go out toward the handle. No reason for both of them to get eaten, she thought.

Jenna’s hand touched the green light inside the cabinet… Bang! There was a huge flash of green light and it was Jenna's turn to scream! She let out a shriek that Callie thought would have woken the whole house, if anyone was actually around. Where in the world were her parents anyway? This was their job!

Jenna was staring straight at a very large, scaly nose that had smoke coming out of it! Callie took another step back just in case. The back of the pantry was open, and all the soup cans and pasta bags were gone. It was like an open window, and strangely it appeared to be daytime. No wonder it had been so bright.

The nose moved back a bit and Callie and Jenna squealed again, first in fear, and then with excitement. Attached to that smoky nose was a huge beast– a dragon with wings!

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy. This story was written for a good
friend's granddaughters, and I hope to reuse for my own grandkids
someday.
To that point, feel free to ask me to 'find and replace' the names of the
children, pet, and other personalized things so you have a printable copy
by emailing me.
When this was first read to Jenna and Callie, the next morning they also
found two necklaces in their own kitchen cabinet, which added to the
“mystery” of the adventure.
I originally found the pendants then used them in the story. I see them for
about $11.00 each on Amazon. Your choice of course, I get no piece of
those sales. Search 'GLOW-IN-THE-DARK MOONLIGHT PENDANT' or
'glow half moon pendant' - get the green glow one.
I do hope you enjoy and, more importantly, I hope the kids get totally
immersed!

The surprise behind the cabinet door
A story about two special girls....
By Jack & Greg Berlin
1
It was really late at night. Callie was almost sound asleep. It had been
an exhausting day of play and joy. School was out for the holiday break and
the days were filled with fun and her Nana.
“Why am I awake?” Callie thought. The prayers were said, the
night-light was on, the covers were pulled up. All was perfect, so off to
sleep...
Wait, what was that noise? No one was up, and that was from
downstairs and not outside. A shiver of dread traveled down Callie's neck.
Ignore it, it was nothing– she hoped– it will go away, for sure. “Close
your eyes, it was just your imagination,” Callie thought...
There it was again! Louder this time.
Someone or something was in the kitchen.
Why had no one else noticed this? Why was Sadie not barking?
Did Jenna, her older sister, not hear this? Where was Dad, this was
his job!
Either way, there were most definitely noises in the kitchen
downstairs. Maybe it was just Mom and Dad.
“Of course it was, Callie,” she thought to herself, “stop being such a
scaredy-cat.” It sure is not like them to make so much noise, though. What
a strange and creepy noise it was! Certainly not a normal sound. A
squeaking and banging, over and over, something almost like a growl– but
not from Sadie!
“Very strange,” Callie thought.
Then, out of nowhere, there was another noise! Louder this time, and
closer. Oh no, something's coming!.... She froze and held her breath.
All of a sudden, Jenna came running in the room.
“Callie,” she whispered, “did you hear the noise coming from
downstairs?”
"Uh huh, was that you?" Callie said, a bit of nervousness in her voice.
“No, I just got up and ran to Mom & Dad's room, and no one is there.
Anna is gone too! They should be there, it is really late and there are no
lights on in the house except my room and now yours, and listen, I still hear
2
growling and grunting from downstairs. And Sadie is not barking, where is
she? This is crazy!”
"You have to go downstairs!" they said at the same time. Jenna
looked at Callie, Callie looked at Jenna. Neither was happy. The other was
shaking their head 'NO!'
Finally, they agreed to go downstairs together. Holding hands of
course. As they walked along, Jenna discovered none of the light switches
worked – strange, as the light was still on in both of their rooms.
“This must be some sort of magic,” Jenna muttered. Callie looked at
her sister with a brave face, but her voice shook a bit.
"Magic?”
Jenna didn’t respond. At this point, whether it was magic or not, both
girls were a little more than scared.
They moved closer to the kitchen. Each step filled them with a little
more fear. It was still their same house but, in the dark, every shadow was
a monster. The noise only got louder. And where had everyone else gone?
The strange noises grew louder and now, with it, there was a glow.
Not like you’d see from a lightbulb, it seemed to pulse brighter and darker.
“Maybe it’s just the light from the fridge?” Callie said hopefully. It was
just a light after all, nothing weird about that. Jenna just shook her head
and put her finger to her lips. As they got closer, Callie could see that the
light had a very greenish tint to it. Maybe not the fridge light after all.
“What glows green?” Jenna whispered, but Callie couldn’t find an
answer. They were at the kitchen. The two sisters looked at each other.
This was it. It was probably nothing. There was a good explanation for it, of
course there was. They stood still for one more hesitating moment, then
stepped through the kitchen doorway together.
Callie let out a squeal that made Jenna jump.
"Shush Callie!" Jenna whispered harshly as she steadied herself. She
might have been a little scared too, but she was the big sister, it wasn’t like
she could show it.
In the kitchen, there was the strangest sight. Now that she had the
chance to look at it, Jenna saw that the glow and the noises – really getting
3
loud now – were coming out of the big pantry cabinet, which was cracked
open. Looking around, the rest of the kitchen was empty and dark, except
for the green light from the cabinet. No one, monster or family, was in sight.
Callie reached out to the cabinet door, but Jenna quickly snatched
her arm back.
"What do you think you are doing Callie?" she demanded.
"Well, we came down to find out what was going on, are we going to
stop now?" Callie whispered back, almost pretending she wasn't scared.
Jenna thought to herself that she must be dreaming, or Callie must
be crazy. She did not know for sure what was going on, or what exactly had
happened, but she did know for sure that something about the world was
very different than when she had gone to bed just a few hours ago.
A loud snort and some green smoke puffed out of the cabinet door. Had
that been a voice too? Jenna and Callie looked at each other.
"Did you hear that?" Callie said.
"Yes,” said Jenna, “there was a grunt, but I thought I heard someone
yell 'Help!’"
"Me too" said Callie, wondering how they now understood animal
grunts and growls.
"OK!" said Jenna, knowing neither of them would be able to go back
to bed after this. "Let's see what's in the pantry.”
Jenna moved toward the cabinet. The light got brighter, and was that
more smoke? Callie took a step back as she watched Jenna's hand go out
toward the handle. No reason for both of them to get eaten, she thought.
Jenna’s hand touched the green light inside the cabinet… Bang!
There was a huge flash of green light and it was Jenna's turn to scream!
She let out a shriek that Callie thought would have woken the whole house,
if anyone was actually around. Where in the world were her parents
anyway? This was their job!
Jenna was staring straight at a very large, scaly nose that had smoke
coming out of it! Callie took another step back just in case. The back of the
pantry was open, and all the soup cans and pasta bags were gone. It was
4
like an open window, and strangely it appeared to be daytime. No wonder it
had been so bright.
The nose moved back a bit and Callie and Jenna squealed again,
first in fear, and then with excitement. Attached to that smoky nose was a
huge beast– a dragon with wings!
5
“Grunt, grunt, growl, grunt,” came out of that huge mouth, so big it hardly
seemed to move to make the sound, along with a huge plume of smoke,
and was that a little bit of ash?
"The dragon wants us to come inside and climb on its back,” Callie
said to her sister. Jenna looked back at Callie with one of those sisterly
looks that told Callie that she knew exactly what the big snout had said.
Then, out loud, Jenna said,
"This has to be a dream, this is way too crazy!" The next words out
of her mouth seemed even crazier. "Let's go Callie, I think this dragon
wants us to help it.”
It was Callie's turn to look at her sister like she was nuts. Maybe that
was it. Maybe they were both just going nuts. Was something messing with
their heads? How could there be a dragon in the cabinet?
Regardless, the two brave girls made their way through the opening
in the back of the pantry.
"Don't look down!" Jenna screamed back at her younger sister.
Callie immediately looked down. They were standing on a ledge, if
you could even call it that, and 'down' went on and on, seemingly forever.
Wow, how high up were they? Callie thought. This was their pantry? She
looked around and realized there were puffy white clouds just a little ways
out there.
"The neighbor's house should be there, not clouds!"
Callie huddled close to Jenna and didn’t respond. There wasn’t much
space on the ledge and her eyes kept creeping over the edge and down,
down, down. There was a low fog in the valley that kept the sisters from
seeing the bottom but, either way, Callie knew it was a long, long way.
Instead, she decided to look back over her shoulder and away from the
drop.
Uh-oh.
"The window is gone, Jenna! It’s only a stone wall behind us!"
Jenna turned and looked herself. They were on a cliff ledge and
however they had gotten there it had disappeared now.
6
“Oh, this is just wonderful,” thought Jenna with just a little bit of
sarcasm.
First she had lost her parents to who knows where, now she had lost
her house! Not to mention that she was standing on a cliff ledge with her
little sister while a flying, fire-breathing dragon was circling around over
their heads and slowly coming closer.
Jenna looked at Callie. Her little sister had a huge smile on her face
as she watched the dragon come closer.
“Callie, you’re completely nuts!” Jenna said as she looked back at the
dragon.
Callie only smiled wider. Wow, it was huge, and beautiful with those
long green scales and flowing tail. The whole thing was the length of five
cars at least! Beautiful, for sure... Jenna just hoped it wasn't hungry.
The dragon stopped circling and came right for them. Its large mouth
was open and rows of huge glimmering teeth reflected in the sunlight. A
shiver went down Jenna’s spine.
Callie shouted, "I am going to name him Smoky!"
"Smoky?" Jenna replied, "You are naming a dragon, one that may
very well eat us, Smoky?” Jenna looked at her sister with a wild stare, as if
she were going to continue, then stopped for a moment.
“Wait, how do you know it’s a boy?"
"I just know!” Callie replied emphatically, as if that explained
everything. “And he has smoke coming out of his nose, duh!"
Jenna looked, and confirmed, there was a whole lot of smoke coming
out of the oncoming dragon’s nose.
"I just hope we aren't his barbecue dinner!"
The dragon came right up to the girls. They could feel the heat of his
breath from between those huge, white teeth, and the wind coming from
the slowly-flapping wings. He, at least it was a he according to Callie,
looked at them with his big, green eyes then slowly turned and bumped one
of its large, webbed wings into the ledge. The girls braced themselves
against each other in case 'Smoky' was trying to knock them off. That
7
would be way too far down to even think about, way up here in the clouds,
so Jenna tried not to.
The tail swung around behind the girls and gave them a push.
"Growl, grunt, grunt, growl!" The sounds came out of Smoky's mouth
alongside a lot more smoke. The girls understood immediately they were
being asked to climb on Smoky's back.
"I don't know about this" yelled Jenna over the noise of the wind and
the snorting dragon. Callie smiled at her big sister, ”What choice do we
have with that big old tail pushing us?" Jenna shrugged. They’d already
come this far. With a big leap, she jumped on the wing of the dragon. Jenna
almost started laughing until she remembered this was dangerous, so
instead waved on her sister as she jumped up on the wing beside her.
With a huge WHOOSH, Smoky started flapping and diving really fast.
"Hold on tight Callie!" screamed Jenna in her best mother-imitation voice.
“Where is our mother,” she mumbled to herself over the roar. “Better
yet, where the heck were they?”
Jenna blinked and saw nothing but thick-billowy clouds in every
direction. She tried to guess how fast they were going, but couldn’t except
to know it was FAST. Smoky flew downward, though Jenna could only tell
because it felt like the big drop on a roller coaster. Her hands hurt from
holding onto the dragon's scales so hard. They were big and smooth like
rocks at the bottom of a stream. She was sure Callie was smiling and had
to admit this was pretty cool, though absolutely, totally, one-hundred
percent terrifying.
All of a sudden, they broke through the huge blanket of fluffy-white
clouds and they could see land below, coming at them really fast. “Are we
going to crash?” they both thought. The wind was too loud to talk, but the
sisters looked at each other, a little bit of fear creeping on their faces.
As if by command, however, Smoky leveled off with a huge flapping
of his incredible wings and they weren't falling anymore. They were still
pretty high, higher than birds fly, but at least no longer plummeting into the
ground!
8
Below them were vast rolling fields, bigger than any the girls had ever
seen! Some of the hills were covered with roaming horses, others with
cows or sheep. Farms with rows of planted crops of wheat or corn etched
lines of plants into the ground. From this high up, it looked like some sort of
crazy puzzle. Off to the left was a village of shabby looking huts, made out
of clay and brick and straw. To their surprise, some even had smoke
coming out of small chimneys.
"Callie, we are not in Atlanta or anywhere close to home,” Jenna
yelled over the whoosh of air as they flew. "There are no traffic jams, heck
there aren't even any cars or light poles or anything from modern society."
"This looks like olden times like in the picture books," said Callie.
"Do you think we’ve gone back in time?”
"That’s crazy talk!" said Calie.
Jenna laughed, "Crazier than riding on a fire breathing dragon in the
clouds over old-timey villages, Callie?" They flew closer. “There are even
people here! Real people! In our pantry!”
"Look!" shouted Callie, ignoring her sister’s disbelief, "That’s a castle
over there!"
Jenna looked where Callie was pointing and sure enough, there was
a large castle with moats and towers with tall, sky-scraping points, just like
in the picture books.
For the twentieth time Jenna wondered if she was really asleep and
this was a dream.
Then she felt the wind on her face, the scales against her hand and
heard the squeals of fear and joy from Callie and, with a little pinch on her
arm, again convinced herself this had to be as real as it gets.
9
One of the towers of the castle had a greenish glow coming out of a
big, framed window. The tower was enormously tall – like downtown Atlanta
tall – and the whole castle seemed dark and mean.
“How could buildings even look mean?” Jenna wondered to herself.
There were big nasty creatures swimming in the moat, with fins that looked
the size of sailboats sticking out of the water. Jenna hoped that this was not
the next stop on their flight. Smoky seemed to be aiming straight for that
big, mean, nasty castle. It really was mean-looking, all black and shadowy.
At that moment Callie yells over the wind, "I don't like that castle
Jenna! It’s dark and there are some nasty creatures down there. I like
castles that are bright, with knights in shining armor and princesses, not
this icky place!"
They were getting really close to the big castle tower now, and the
green glow was getting bright. Jenna jumped in fright and almost fell off
when Callie screamed.
"Duck!"
Jenna looked down first and gasped as she saw how high they still
were, then she looked at the castle wall. Wait, what! There were men there.
10
Not just any men, but soldiers. And not just any soldiers, but soldiers with
bows. Bows that happened to be shooting arrows at them!
Jenna let out a yelp and clung tight to Smoky the dragon. Thankfully
he was so big, she could hide pretty well. But what if he gets hit…?
“This gets better and better,” she thought. “But at least we can turn
and fly off, right?” Jenna shouted at the dragon, "Turn Smoky, turn– let's get
out of here!"
“Maybe dragons can't hear,” she thought. With a creeping
desperation, she tugged as hard as she could on Smoky's horns, or
whatever they were, trying to turn the dragon. I need to talk to Callie if we
ever get home about some of her crazy behavior.
Regardless of Jenna’s pleading, the dragon and the girls kept going
straight at the tower, arrows flying all around. Some hit Smoky and
bounced off! Arrows couldn’t pierce the huge dragon scales. It was then
that Jenna then realized the dragon was protecting them with his body.
Callie looked back at her sister with obvious relief on her face.
All of a sudden, something rumbled in Smoky’s chest.
“Is he going to burp?” Jenna thought with a giggle.
The dragon’s chest swelled and then he did something that the girls
could only think was a dragon’s way of sneezing! A huge blast of fire shot
out from his mouth like a flame thrower. The men on the wall ran for cover.
Some ran into each other and others tripped and fell off the wall.
Callie started laughing.
“That will teach you to shoot arrows at little girls!"
Jenna couldn’t help but laugh too, both girls hollering at the soldiers.
The men ran from the fire that blackened the wall and left small heaps of
hot bricks and smoke. Most of them were able to get down the stairs to
safety, and soon there was no one on the wall at all.
Smoky turned back toward the tower, and Jenna and Callie both saw
a figure surrounded by a faint green halo of light looking out of the tower
window. It was another girl!
‘Is this what’s going to happen to us?’ Jenna thought, ‘Are we going
to be prisoners in the castle?’
11
Smoky went right up to to the tower window, almost like the girl in the
tower was calling him. Maybe she actually was, but she was not making a
sound, just watching them come closer. Then she waved and Jenna smiled
as Callie waved back, and then Jenna also waved to the girl, still not sure
what was going on. She looked friendly enough Jenna thought to herself.
Callie leaned close to Jenna and whispered, "She looks like a princess,
Jenna. Look at her beautiful dress and jewels. I think she is a prisoner
locked in the tower by those mean old men that were shooting at us!"
12
Jenna just smiled at the thought that Callie seemed to have summed
up the likely situation quite correctly.
As they drew close, Jenna yelled, "Hello! We are Jenna and Callie
McJunkin and I think you know Smoky the dragon because you are not
frightened by him and he seems drawn to you. Are you a prisoner in this
tower?"
"Yes, I am trapped in this tower. I am Princess Arabella. I liked to be
called Belle, but my mother gets furious if anyone calls me that. The dragon
belongs to me as I am the green princess of the forest. My powers protect
the land and keep it lush and green. His real name is Koyor and he is one
of the last of his kind. He is supposed to protect me, but I was betrayed and
kidnapped at night by the evil kingdom of Dalroth; and I was imprisoned
here in their evil castle. They want my father's kingdom and my forest as
their own. With your help, we won't let that happen. But hurry, I hear guards
coming up the tower!"
13
With that, she waved Koyor the dragon close to the window and
urged Callie and Jenna to climb through the window. Jenna started to tell
Callie not to look down, as they were very high in the air, but she knew if
she did, Callie would immediately ignore her and look down, so she kept
quiet and held Callie's hand as they climbed off the dragon's back and
through the tower window.
What they saw was a cold, stone room, with some blankets and a
wash bowl, but not much else. Princess Arabella had a chain attached to
her ankle with a lock, with other end of the chain secured by a bolt in the
stone floor. Arabella looked at Callie and Jenna and exclaimed, "What
wonderful, fine young ladies you are to come and rescue me!" Callie
snorted and said, "That lock is the size of a baseball, just how are we
supposed to get it off of you?"
Jenna gave Callie a cross-eyed look and put her finger to her lips to
say shush. "Be polite to the Princess" she said. Callie returned the
cross-eyed look right back at her and replied "OK, what do you suggest we
do, Jenna?"
Jenna was stumped. Callie was right, there was no way to break the
chain or the lock, and she heard the footsteps of the guards coming up the
tower growing louder.
Arabella smiled and said, "I sent my green light to look for help and it
was drawn to you two, and opened a door from your world to mine. You
girls were drawn to the magic so you must have some strong magic inside
of you. Alone I cannot break this lock, but maybe with our combined magic
we can do it. Come Callie, come Jenna, place your hands on the lock with
me."
Callie and Jenna reached over and grabbed the lock, as did Arabella.
From their six hands on the lock, a green glow appeared and grew brighter
and brighter. Arabella whispered, "Imagine the lock opening with all your
heart."
All three girls closed their eyes and concentrated as hard as they
could on the lock, scrunching their eyes tight. Then there was a large green
14
flash and a CLANG as the lock opened and bounced on the floor. Arabella
took the clamp off her bruised leg and yelled, “Let's get out of here. We
only have a few minutes before the guards come through the door."
Callie and Jenna didn't have to be told twice. They turned and bolted
toward the window where Koyor the dragon was hovering just outside.
Jenna helped Callie on, then helped Arabella on and was just about to
climb out when the door behind her burst open.
Callie shrieked really loud as she saw the men take out their swords
and start to approach her sister. "Duck Jenna" yelled Arabella. Jenna
wasn't sure why, but she ducked under the inside windowsill and with that
Arabella commanded "Koyor protect Jenna!"
The dragon faced the window and shot a huge ball of fire into the
room. The men saw what was coming and flung themselves back out the
door. Jenna could hear the yells of pain as they fell on the stone steps
outside the tower room and she was pretty sure at least one of them had
their pants catch on fire.
Jenna smiled with relief and joined the other two girls on Koyor the
dragon's back and they started to fly up and away from that evil, dark
castle.
As they flew south, the gray skies broke into afternoon sunshine.
“How long have we been here?” Jenna thought. She looked over at Callie
who was grinning ear to ear as her hair flew in the wind. She sure seemed
to love flying on dragons! The fields became forests, then after a while
farms and pastures. In the distance Jenna saw another castle, but this one
looked a whole lot friendlier. Its stone was shinier and there was gold trim
on the walls and towers.
Callie shouted, “There is a castle over there!" Princess Arabella
calmly responded: "that is my parent's castle. You have saved me and I am
finally back home after being kidnapped so many days ago. Soon you will
meet my parents, the King and Queen." Callie gulped and whispered to
Jenna, “We are going to meet a king and queen. I am not so sure I want to
do that." Jenna just smiled and nodded, then held Callie's hand to reassure
her.
15
Koyor circled and slowly landed in the big courtyard within the castle
walls. There were villagers gathered, plus a lot of soldiers all lined up in
their fancy uniforms. The three girls climbed off of the dragon and Callie
and Jenna tried to dust themselves off before they started meeting all the
royalty. "Our hair is a mess," Callie said. Jenna agreed that after flying in
that wind it would take quite a brushing to get out all the tangles.
All of a sudden, trumpets sounded and a man in a uniform yelled in a
very loud voice, "All hail the King and Queen!" Jenna almost jumped and
Callie squeezed her hand tight. The girls were more nervous about this
situation than they were about men shooting arrows at them.
All the men in the courtyard bowed and the ladies curtsied. Arabella
took off running and leapt into her father's arms for a hug. He may be King,
but she needed her dad right then. The King blushed and started to
admonish his daughter for such a public display with all of their subjects
looking at them, but his wife the Queen, crying for joy, quickly hugged her
daughter too, and for a few seconds they were just a happy family glad to
be reunited safely. Jenna and Callie both started to tear up as they
wondered when or if they would see their family again.
The King started to approach Callie and Jenna. They both did their
best curtsy to show respect, even while shaking just a little from
nervousness. The King reached down down and hugged Callie, then
Jenna. The Queen came over and did the same, still wiping away her tears.
The crowd of villagers let out a combined gasp that you could hear
throughout the courtyard, as no one but family could physically touch the
royal family in public.
The King began speaking in a loud voice, the way king's do, Jenna
thought. In a very deep, commanding voice he said, “These fine young
ladies did what no knight in my kingdom could do. They rescued my
daughter Princess Arabella. They are now deserving of whatever riches
and lands they desire as true heroes of my Kingdom of Tradlor."
“But Father,” Arabella said, “Callie and Jenna need to get home. After
it gets dark, the window to their world will not reopen for many years, and
16
they cannot carry things from this world to theirs. They really must hurry if
they are to see home again.”
"Take a knee young ladies," the King ordered. Callie and Jenna
quickly obeyed as the King was not someone to argue with. The King took
out his huge sword that was hanging by his side. It was decorated with
some of the same green jewels that Arabella's tiara and necklace had in
them. It was a scary sight, but Jenna and Callie weren't scared, well not too
much.
The King laid the sword first on Callie's right shoulder, then left
shoulder, then again on both of Jenna's shoulders, and boomed in his deep
voice, "I hereby pronounce to all the kingdom that from now on you will be
known as Duchess Callie McJunkin and Duchess Jenna McJunkin of the
Kingdom of Tradlor! Be safe in your many travels and adventures young
duchesses of Tradlor, and always carry the honor of being great heroes of
our kingdom!"
The King motioned for Callie and Jenna to stand, and Queen hugged
them again to more groans from the crowd, which now counted in the
hundreds of people. Koyor would grunt and blow smoke from time to time,
and that kept the crowd from getting too close. The Queen whispered,
“Thanks so much for bringing my daughter home to us."
Princess Arabella approached and said, "It is time for you to go home
now. The sun is setting fast on the horizon. Thank you so much for your
help Callie and Jenna. I wish we had more time to get to know each other."
"I will miss you Belle," Callie said. The Queen got a funny look on her
face, then smiled. Jenna said, "We will both miss you Princess Arabella, we
hope those evil people from the Kingdom of Dalroth leave you alone!"
Arabella responded, "If they start more trouble, now I know where I
can get some help. I’ll just send my dragon to find Duchesses Callie and
Jenna. Now, give me a hug and get back on Koyor so you can get home."
The girls all hugged, and there were a few tears in saying goodbye.
Arabella took out of a pouch two necklaces in the shape of a crescent
moon, with a small greenish jewel in it, and gave one to Jenna and one to
Callie.
17
Arabella said, "I am so sorry to say farewell, but please accept this
gift of a piece of my green magic to remember me and my land by. It should
help protect you and bring good luck. Now, off you go!"
With a final wave, Callie and Jenna climbed on the dragon and he
started to fly away. Arabella, the King and Queen, and all of the people that
were gathered around were waving, so Callie and Jenna waved back until
they finally were too far away to be seen any longer.
Callie looked at Jenna and said in a sad voice, "I don't like goodbyes.
Jenna, do you think we will ever see Belle again?" Jenna replied, "I don't
know Callie, but right now I want to see Mom, Dad and Anna again. I miss
home." Callie quickly added: "And Nana too!" Jenna nodded her head.
"Yes, it was time to be back home," she thought, doing normal kid stuff.
Heck, even homework sounded OK if it meant being back in her own
house, petting Sadie, watching TV and having her own bed back. She
could even put up with Anna climbing on her.
Koyor was flying straight toward a mountain wall. As they got closer,
the girls could see a ledge. “Callie, this must be the same ledge we were
on when we went through the kitchen cabinet!" Jenna said, thinking how
silly it sounded to say cabinet and ledge in the same sentence. "Look
there," shouted Callie. Jenna saw it too. There was an area of rock wall just
above the ledge that was glowing a dull green. Jenna also noticed Callie's
necklace that Belle gave her was glowing, and when she looked down, so
was hers. "Your necklace stone is glowing," said Callie.
18
Jenna looked back at the land behind them and noticed the sun was
completely gone and the sky was growing dark with the sunset. “We better
hurry,” she thought.
Koyor gently bumped into the ledge and Jenna urged Callie to hop on
the ledge and not be slow about it. Jenna then climbed off and hopped on
the ledge as well. When she got her balance she saw Callie was hugging
the dragon and then gave it a kiss. What a funny sight as Callie's arms
didn't even reach the top of the dragon's huge neck. Jenna heard Callie
say, “Goodbye, Smoky, thanks for taking us flying on this adventure and
keeping us safe from all those bad men. I hope I see you again someday!"
Jenna saw the opening behind the green glow in the rock and
grabbed Callie's hand and tugged her through the opening. She looked
back one last time and whispered gently, "Thanks Koyor, now go take care
of Arabella"
Then they went through the opening...
The next thing Callie and Jenna knew they were waking up. In their
own rooms! In their own beds! Were their parents here? Anna?
Was it just a dream?
