As one of the oldest communities in Michigan, Milford has a vibrant history — well documented by devoted resi- dents who’ve become personally con- nected to the city’s growth and culture. Milford’s once Victorian-style down- town Main Street was home to 14 mills, a general store and distillery. The presence of several water mills allowed Milford to become on of Michigan’s earliest communities to have a system of electric lights. The Milford Historical Society was founded in 1973 by a group of citizens who recognized the impor- tance of the heritage of their community and wished to share it with their contemporaries and preserve it for those who will follow. The main vehicle for shar- ing our heritage is the Milford Historic Museum, which was established in 1976 and is run by the society. Members have established a museum, a research and archives room and have sponsored, in conjunc- tion with the Milford Township Library and the State of Michigan Library, the microfilm- ing of the Milford Times newspaper beginning with the first issue in 1871. The society’s continuing projects include an annual home tour, various research projects and an effort toward local architec- tural preservation. Officially known as the Pettibone Creek Hydroelectric Station, it was built to supply power to Ford’s Milford carburetor fac- tory. The station was decommissioned around 1953 and acquired by the Village of Milford in 1970. The Milford Historical Society is working with the Village of Milford to restore and interpret the building, as well as possibly return the turbines to working order. Mill Race Park, Commerce This 8-acre park is located on the corner of Commerce and S. Commerce across the street from Byers Homestead Historical Farm. Site of a former grist mill. In the 1840s the mill had been the center of the farming community of Commerce. Today, only the excavation for the mill race, the mill flume and the stone founda- tions of the mill exist. The site is entered on the State Register of Historic Sites and a historic marker is located in the park. Hiking trails cross covered bridges over Wee Creek.
