Below we highlight some of the DEIB Council members’ “My Why” statements. Ryan Calvin For me, being a mom is the most rewarding job out there, but it is also a job that challenges me daily. Challenges me to be and do better! My daughters are my why. I want them to have the confidence to speak up when they hear and see inequities, to be allies, advocates, and leaders - being the voice when others feel they don’t have a voice! I want them to appreciate that every human has special gifts to offer and that uniqueness is powerful. I want them to know that they can do anything they want in this lifetime…quickly shifting phrases of “I can’t do this” to “I can do this.” I want them to understand the power of kindness, acceptance, empathy, and respect. Emma and Ashlyn are my why. Raven Lanelle DEIB is vital to me because it creates safe spaces/communities where all humans can connect and thrive regardless of background, gender, race, ability, etc. It helps us all to be more aware of the experiences and needs of others. Gabby Masiero To me, DEIB is about fostering an environment where respect, dignity, and justice aren’t mere ideals, but foundational principles guiding our interactions. Through DEIB, we cultivate love, comfort, and peace, ensuring everyone feels valued and heard. It’s about understanding and embracing differences, allowing for adaptation and growth on both individual and collective levels. DEIB strives to level the playing field, eliminating barriers, and promoting acceptance, creating a world where everyone can thrive regardless of their background. DEIB is a commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society where every individual’s unique contribution is celebrated and honored. My why is to help foster an environment where those around me feel safe, supported, and able to be their authentic selves. Ren DeGroff To better understand the struggles of others and help them feel comfortable with who they are. John Armenia DEIB is important to me because I want to work in a place full of diversity to make myself, my team, my product, and this company the best that it can be. I believe that can only happen when we have different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences represented and valued. I think it enriches my understanding of the world and promotes the innovation and creativity that we need to sustain and grow. Crystal Hoecker Lisa Joiner-Cummins I want everyone to feel comfortable and valued for who they are, inside and out. 4/7 Stephanie Abad 4/8 Mark Tavilla 4/16 Joel Adams 4/18 Diane Spaulding 4/22 Julian Dolores April Celebrations 5 Years Gabriel Gonzalez Bradley Jones 9 Years Eric Asberry Steve Wilson Birthdays Anniversaries 16 Years Souren Nazarian 17 Years Daniel Magnarelli Barbara Murphy Mark Tavilla Facilities and Office Intern A P R I L 2 0 2 4 V O L . 4 WELCOME TO THE TEAM! STRESS AWARENESS MONTH Asking for help when you need is an act of courage! Please know that we have resources available through our medical provider, Cigna. Please see our behavioral resources HERE. Stress is a natural response to life's challenges, but it can feel overwhelming sometimes. Small steps towards stress reduction can make a big difference in our overall wellbeing. Below are some examples of small steps that you can take to try to help create a culture of self-care and stress management. Time Management Setting Boundaries Allow Room for Mistakes Start by assessing your existing approach. How good are you at organizing your time so that you get the important things done well? Can you balance your time between different activities? And when you do make time to do something, are you able to focus – and get it finished? Boundaries are limits we identify for ourselves, and apply through action or communication. When we define what we need to feel secure and healthy, when we need it, and create tools to protect those parts of ourselves, we can do wonders for our well-being at work and at home — which, in turn, allows us to bring our best selves to both places. If you don’t make mistakes, you also fail to try and take risks. Succumbing to your fears and letting it control you, means denying yourself the opportunity to explore and thrive. As the popular saying goes, these mistakes are building blocks to success. It supports you to live your life to the fullest as it replaces your fears with strength and enthusiasm. Did you know? How people introduce themselves, expect to be introduced, and the number of parts their name consists of varies around the world, uniting families and cultural groups. In the US, the first name identifies an individual and is typically given to a person at birth. The last name is inherited and shared with other members of the individual’s immediate family. In other countries, such as China, the family name or surname comes first. Traditionally, babies are named 100 days after birth as it is considered unlucky to name a baby before birth. In Spain and Latin America, a child may receive two surnames when they are born: the first from the first surname of the father and the second from the first surname of the mother. This naming tradition makes it possible for the mother to never lose her maiden surname and therefore her name is carried on to the next generation. Zulu (South Africa) names, also referred to as “home names” are often given regarding the situation of the family when a child is born. For example, names can denote expectations and encouragement for a baby, reflect how the family relates to others in the community, or describe the weather or setting in which the baby was born. People with the same surname once belonged to the same localized clan. The clan name, or isibongo, functions now as the surname. It allows us to appreciate our similarities and differences, fostering a deeper understanding of others. Celebrate Diversity Month originated in April 2004, and since then has helped us to understand and honor our similarites and differences such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, and other ideologies. World Culture Day – April 15th World Culture Day is celebrated on April 15th and aims to preserve the cultures of all countries and communities. World Culture Day began through the announcement of an international pact and since then has helped to establish initiatives and events that inspire unity. Across 7 continents and 235 countries, it is said that there are more than 1,000 cultures, subcultures, and tribes. With each culture comes a variety of languages, religions, literature, art, music, poetry, and philosophy. Some traditions unique to the United States include Ground Hog Day and Mardis Gras. Take a look at some of the unique cultural traditions from around the world: Top 26 Cultural Traditions Around The World Celebrating what makes us Clothing Around the World In many cultures, clothing represents more than what meets the eye. Clothing can be a status of wealth as well as a representation of celebrations. Explore traditional clothing from around the world, ranging from warrior headdresses to 16th- century skirts with Google’s Arts and Culture exhibit. Time to Eat Think of the expression, to break bread with someone. This expression refers to the way that food brings people together. Food is meant to be exchanged and shared with family and friends. Recipes may be passed down from generation to generation or used to bring people together during celebrations. Cultures differ in the types of habits they associate with food. For example, in some cultures, it is common to eat with your hands, while in others this may be considered rude. Sometimes, finishing all of the food on your plate is considered polite, whereas, in other contexts, it signals to your host that he or she did not feed you enough.
