Delaware Governor Jack Markell Joins ACME to Honor Local Farmers Will be joined by Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Ed Kee to recognize grower Bob Minner for 40 years of service August 12, 2010 09:15 AM Eastern Daylight Time HOCKESSIN, Del. & MALVERN, Pa.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Delaware Governor Jack Markell and Secretary of Agriculture Ed Kee will join ACME, a leading neighborhood grocer and SUPERVALU company, to honor the work and contributions made by local Delaware farmers on August 12 at 11:00 a.m. at ACME’s Hockessin store. Governor Markell will be on hand to proclaim August 12, 2010 as “Bob Minner Day” to honor Dover farmer Bob Minner for 40 years of providing Delaware with fresh, locally-grown produce. “Agriculture is a critical industry to our state and an important employer for so many families,” said Governor Markell. “This is a great example of a healthy relationship. Getting locally grown items on the shelves of stores this size improves the health of our economy. Our farmers’ fresh produce in turn, improves the health of these stores’ customers.” “ACME is committed to providing our customers with high-quality produce and it doesn’t get any fresher than what we get from working with local farmers,” said Dan Sanders, president, ACME. “It is the hard work and dedication by local farmers like Bob that enable us to meet the demands of our customers, and more importantly, allow everyone to feel good about supporting farmers and keeping money in the community. Bob is an institution and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.” Earlier this year, ACME launched its “Locally Harvested” initiative, which is a commitment to deliver the high- quality, fresh produce consumers are seeking. Partnering with over 45 local farmers, the initiative has allowed the company to increase its locally-grown produce inventory by over 25 percent from last year, while providing consumers the convenience of being able to buy farm fresh produce at their primary grocery store. “Working with local growers is a win-win for all those involved and I know first-hand how satisfying it is for us to be able to work together to provide the community with the freshest produce available,” said Jay Schneider, ACME category manager. “I’ve worked with Bob for 10 years and am honored to be able to recognize him, and all local growers.” The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the ACME store located at 128 Lantana Drive in Hockessin. There will also be opportunities to speak with the local growers to sample and learn about fresh produce.
