AIPM TAS Chapter
Lunchtime Seminar Event
Guest Speaker: Shane Wheller, Principal Consultant with AdvancedPM
Lessons Learnt from the SOE125 Site Implementation Project.
The Department of Defence $38m SOE125 project was responsible for implementing a
single Standard Operating Environment, Windows XP, across 63,000 desktops on two
networks in four countries. The project rolled out the new SOE across diverse business
areas such as hospitals, air traffic control towers, business critical operations rooms and
other high level defence functions; on networks which contained 330 third party
applications. It included the amalgamation and decommissioning of servers in 166 server
rooms, and the migration of 93,000 user accounts (which was a major project in itself).
There are lessons to be learnt from such a vast undertaking that are applicable across all
types of projects. The session will cover:
Corporate Governance and authority – the keys to success
Change Management - how far can a project go to make things happen
Measuring earned value - finding something to measure without changing the goal
posts each week
The importance of prior preparation and planning
The importance of a systems approach in bringing order to chaos
