CUMBERLAND HEIGHTS COMPLETES CAMPAIGN FOR RECOVERY Cumberland Heights, one of the Southeast’s oldest and most experienced alcohol and chemical dependency treatment facilities, today completed its five-year Campaign for Recovery, which raised $13 million and enabled the largest physical expansion in Cumberland Heights’ 42-year history. “The community support for this campaign was exceptional,” said Frank Gorrell III, chairman of the Cumberland Heights board of directors. “In a very challenging environment we exceeded our $12 million fundraising goal by more than a million dollars. We are proud to have new facilities where we can provide more quality services and more importantly, our patients know the community is behind what we do and feel that support on an individual level.” Legendary singer-songwriter John Hiatt and his wife Nancy chaired the Campaign for Recovery, announced publicly in spring of 2002 with a goal of $12 million. Ending January 23, it has already raised slightly more than $13 million for expanded facilities that includes two new buildings with a total of 65,000 square feet. “Experience has proven successful recovery is a life-long process, not a treat-and- release program,” said Gorrell. “This expansion has dramatically changed the face of our flagship River Road campus allowing Cumberland Heights to continue ongoing treatment activities and extend aftercare programs to help patients achieve life-long recovery.” The two new buildings, a Family Life Center and an Adolescent Residence, allow Cumberland Heights to treat 20% more patients. The Dorothy Cate and Thomas F. Frist, Sr. Family Life Center includes the John Hiatt-Ken Levitan Music Therapy Room, the Jack C. Massey Gymnasium, a 210-seat auditorium, counseling and teaching rooms, fitness center with aerobic machines and weight lifting equipment, and other program space to accommodate Cumberland Heights’ Children’s Program. The Hazel Hawkins Martin Memorial Adolescent Center adds 24 new beds. Founded in 1965, Cumberland Heights has treated more than 70,000 patients and has directly touched the lives of more than 200,000 family members of patients. Patients come from all 50 states and a number of foreign countries and they range from indigent and unemployed individuals, business people and government employees to nationally recognized personalities from the entertainment and sports industries. Cumberland Heights’ primary mission is to treat alcohol and chemical abuse, which the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation characterizes as “the nation’s number one health problem” costing over $144 billion annually. Cumberland Heights deploys a holist approach addressing physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions of recovery. Cumberland Heights operates seven locations, including its flagship facility, a 177- acre campus located at 8283 River Road, 16 miles west of downtown Nashville. -30-
