Physical description of course obstacles and features are listed below. There are several draws for the sheep on this course. These include the following (see HRD Course Diagram below; features labeled on map are in bold type): 1) the Gate to Field which lies closest to the house; 2) the remainder of the farm pasture beyond Graze 3 and Graze 4, over the Crest of the Ridge; 3) the Woods Field (southwest corner of map); 4) the Pen, from where the sheep begin the course; 5) two holding areas/pens: the Holding Pen to the north near the driveway (used for sort exercise in HRD II and HRD III), and “B Course Holding Pens” southeast of the course, just beyond the Outer Road. In general, this HRD course tests the ability of Handler and dog to read the impact of these draws on the sheep and to respond appropriately so that the flock movement, grazing, gathering, holding, and sorting tasks can be completed efficiently. Orange cones, where specified, will mark the inside of all turns on the course. Blue cones will mark the Handler’s posts, all levels, and Drive legs for HRD II & III. “Road” and “Graze” edges on the course are marked by furrows. Except if otherwise specified by judge, movement on the course is in a counter clockwise direction around the field on the road. The sheep should move steadily and quietly along the roads, without rushing, lagging, or weaving. Except where specified, handler and dog may take any position necessary relative to the flock throughout the course while moving—fetching, driving, or tending. Except during the act of sorting, the handler may not touch the dog or livestock without penalty from the time the Take Pen Gate is opened at the beginning of the run until it is fastened shut completing the run. If a majority of the flock goes off course, sheep should be brought back as efficiently as possible to the point where the flock initially strayed. Except where noted, if more than half the flock is 50 yards or more off course for longer than 1 minute, then the run should be terminated. A few sheep drifting slightly off a road or out of Graze not due to the dog’s direct action (or deliberate lack of action) should not be penalized. The time limits and total distances the sheep travel for each course: HRD I: 20 minutes, 520 yards HRD II: 30 minutes, 580 yards HRD III: 40 minutes, 830 yards
