CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
SENIOR ENGINEER
SUMMARY:
Positions in this classification are responsible for overseeing design and construction of major
utilities and transportation engineering projects. This work entails technical planning, specifications
and estimates, inspection and control of construction work in progress. Duties may include heading
up a technical team for the accomplishment of specific engineering functions. Such teams include
quality control and code compliance; design, surveys and drafting; and capital projects. Work of the
teams includes review of private and public projects from inception to completion. This may
include coordinating input for SEPA, JDP, Permitting and Quality Control and the provision of
support for the maintenance and development standards for water, sewer, street, and solid waste
reduction and storm drainage. Incumbents prepare and process documents such as contracts, deeds,
bills of sale, inter-local agreements, agenda bills etc. Work occurs with internal as well as external
customers and requires excellent interpersonal skills and advanced engineering training and
experience.
Positions with an emphasis in Structural Engineering review and ensure compliance and accuracy
through technical review of construction plans and proposals (both residential and commercial) for
structural compliance with numerous complex, technical and administrative building codes and
rules. This may also include the review of mechanical, plumbing, Washington State Energy Code,
ventilations and accessibility codes for life safety components.
SCOPE:
Reports to: Engineering Manager, Public Works Engineering Director, or Building Official.
Supervises: May supervise technical engineering staff or plans examiner staff as necessary.
