OpenSystems Publishing Editorial Instructions 7/5/07 10:19 AM EditorialInstructions.Version7-5-07.doc Page 1 of 3 Overview More than 50,000 software, hardware, and systems engineers from around the world receive the printed and PDF versions of OpenSystems Publishing’s free publications, which consist of staff-written, contributed, and bylined articles by various engineers in the field. In addition, we distribute our publications to attendees at selected worldwide tradeshows and conferences (see the individual editorial calendars for specific events). Your article can expose our subscribers to the latest trends in technology as well as your company’s product offerings. Contributed articles, like our magazines, are written for engineers by engineers. These features should explain developments and issues related to the designated topic for a particular section. Editorial calendars for each publication, available for download at http://www.opensystems-publishing.com/publications, list the editorial features and product guide features for each issue. Editorial assistance OpenSystems Publishing editors are always available to review abstracts for a technologically accurate article. Editors can work with contributors throughout the article submission process, from the initial phase of identifying a theme to the final stages of revising drafts for publication. Editorial staff contact information is available at http://www.opensystems-publishing.com/company/directory/. Initial guidelines 1. All articles must be original and unpublished. 2. All articles previously published by the vendor on the proposed article subject within the preceding 90 days from the date of abstract submittal must be disclosed to OpenSystems Publishing. We use this information to ensure that the material has not been published previously, so we do not violate other publication’s copyright protections. Article reprints Hard copy and electronic article reprints are available to authors and their companies after the article has been published. For more information, contact Becky Mullaney at 717-399-1900 ext. 166 or visit http://www.opensystems-publishing.com/reprints. Article content Contributors should think and write like engineers. If you make a statement, prove it. We don’t demand polished prose, but we are looking for solid, detailed technical content. Keep the discussion at a conceptual level first, then present your company’s product as an example of your proposed solution. This will establish credibility for you and your company, as readers prefer a well thought-out article over a sales pitch. Incorporate figures, tables, and illustrations to add visual appeal, and try to maintain the active verb tense. Article organization Use the problem/solution format. Consider the following three-part organization with an optional fourth part: • Part 1: Provide a description of the problem to be solved. • Part 2: Describe your conceptual solution to the problem. • Part 3: Describe your actual implementation of that solution. • Part 4 (optional): Show how your product has actually been deployed. Avoid mentioning your company or product more than twice. Article length Articles vary in length and must be submitted by the editorial calendar due date. Some sidebars and supplemental information may be posted online. Articles may be cut during the production phase to meet the issue page budget. Please do not format your article with type font styles, columns, or embedded logos and images. Include a reference for each art figure, photo, or image within the text and not as a separate caption.
