Call for Application for Joint Research on Fashion and Clothing Culture 2009 supported by the contract between “Joint Research Centre for Fashion and Clothing Culture, Bunka Fashion Research Institute, Bunka Women’s University” and “Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Government of Japan.” 1. Purpose of Project This announcement is conducted under the project with the contract between “Joint Research Center for Fashion and Clothing Culture, Bunka Fashion Research Institute, Bunka Women’s University” and “The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Government of Japan”, promoting joint researches in the field of humanities and social sciences. The Center has been requested to establish an overview of the research activities on the culture of fashion and clothing in the field of humanities, social sciences, and science and technology, in addition to promoting the activities through the joint research. Furthermore, it has been asked to enroll a comprehensive center of information on the fashion and clothing culture and to distribute the fruits of the activities not only to Japan but also to the world. The aim of this project is to promote the wide and total development of the research in the field of fashion and clothing culture, and, for the success of the project, to stimulate the joint researches organized by the researchers working in various sectors, such as universities, museums, etc. The researchers are advised to utilize the books, fashion-related texts, audio-visuals, etc. accumulated at Bunka Women’s University. Through the broad promotion activity of the Center, the research community of fashion clothing culture must be developed and integrated, and must encourage young researchers in the field of fashion and clothing culture as well. 2. Subject The research to be applied must be performed by about three to five (3 – 5) researchers and concerned with the subject of fashion and clothing culture. The research group must consist of members who are research workers from more than one university or organization, or are specialists for the research subject. The research should be conducted in accordance with the research field handled in the Center (refer to 4. below), and should be pioneering in nature so as to anticipate its contribution to new developments in the field. 3. Applicants Researchers belonging to universities or other organizations, specialists in the research field and students studying in doctoral programs can enroll to form a research group. The actual applicant has to be in charge of representing and supervising the research group. However, the doctoral program students are not eligible to be the actual applicant. Foreign researchers can be included in the research group as well. However, those who have to be the actual applicant should live in Japan during the research period planned and belong to a research organization such as a university, institution or museum, etc. in Japan when they apply and live subsequent to the application. The actual applicant who is previously the actual participant of the research and is already conducting the research work at the Center can be excluded. 4. Fields and classifications of research Since research fields of the fashion culture cover a wide range, the subjects and topics related to the following fields and interdisciplinary subjects and topics that will stimulate future development in these fields are advised. Classifications of the research are (1) Projectile research and (2) General research. Research subjects and topics are acceptable for both types. (1) Projectile research Joint research in priority at the Center (b and c were added in 2009): a. Research on “kimono” culture b. Research on folk fashion and clothing culture in East Asia c. Research on trend and dynamism of modern and contemporary fashion (2) General research Joint research in the following three main areas and their interdisciplinary areas: d. Research on fashion and clothing culture in the field of Humanities e. Research on fashion and clothing culture in the field of Social Science f. Research on fashion and clothing culture in the field of Natural Science and Technology The joint researches assigned to those in the interdisciplinary filed are especially welcome. 5. Number of the research to be adopted Approximately ten (10) are currently planned for. 6. Length of research The research needs to be accomplished within one (1) to three (3) years from 2009 to 2011. Because the budget supporting the researches is based on a single-year system, re-application will be necessary annually with results to be reported within that year if a research subject that requires multiple years is adopted. The interim evaluation concerning the research progress and results in 2008~2009, done at the Center, will be performed by the Ministry at the beginning of 2010, so please pay special attention to research plan for this year. 7. Research expenses allowance Two million (2,000,000) yen is the maximum allowed amount of expense per year for a single research application. If the amount of budget for the expense is to exceed the maximum allowed for a certain year, the reasons should be described clearly. Please consult the Center secretariat if you plan to purchase any equipment in excess of 50,000 yen and if the period of its durability will be longer than one year for each piece of equipment. The research expense is limited to be used for the joint research and cannot be distributed to each member of the research group in advance. Management and transactions regarding the expenses, purchasing control for equipment or expendables, etc. will be handled within the Center secretariat collectively and exclusively. 8. Points of attention in planning the joint research Please, plan your joint research with the following items (a-h) in mind: a. In view of the purpose of this project, the application must clearly describe that the research is planned carefully as a joint research by multiple researchers attempting to achieve results from said research through collaboration of the members of the research group. b. Show the purpose of the research as a group, make clear the role of respective member of the research group, and explain your intending results as a group. c. Upon carrying out your joint research work, fully utilize the facilities, equipment, data, etc. provided by the Center and the Institute. d. Upon expending the budget, the actual applicant (supervisor) must manage the work of the research in total and watch that the expense is to be efficient and appropriate. Please, remind that the division of the research budget among co-researchers at the outset of research is not advised when performing the joint research. e. When estimating budgets, please be aware that the expenses are only available to the joint research and not part of the estimate for the expense assigned to the work of the respective researcher in the research group. f. Using the budget to purchase expendable items etc. in a researcher’s work area will not be allowed by the instruction of the Ministry. (As noted in the application documents, the Center secretariat will be responsible for purchasing.) g. When planning meetings (study meetings, symposiums, etc.) or public relations activities, use the available facilities and homepage of the Institute. Please make good use of these and provide us with your agenda in advance. (Crowding events at the end of the year will likely result in inefficiency of the support system, so please consider this when making your plans.) h. Please, prepare an appropriate plan for your budget so that the expenses are not concentrated too heavily at the end of the fiscal year. Please contact the Center secretariat for further details. 9. Agreement to perform joint research a. In order to ensure smooth budget performance, use of data and facilities, etc. within Bunka Women’s University, the researchers of the research groups (supervisors or staff members in charge) will be enrolled as a joint researcher in the Bunka Fashion Research Institute, Bunka Women’s University. An identification card will be issued to those individual. Please keep the ID card on your person at all times when visiting the University so that you will be allowed to use the facilities/equipment and access necessary data. b. Submission of a confirmation letter stating that the research will be carried out in accordance with the standard of “Guidelines for business process services contracts” form of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology will be required at the time of delivery of the research grant to pledge execution of research funds appropriately. c. Presentation of research progress reports at the end of each fiscal year during research period, and research results reports at the end of the last fiscal year of the research period (at the completion of the research) are required. d. Consult the Center secretariat concerning Intellectual Property Rights for publishing research results and/or opening created data bases, etc. 10. Sending and deadline for applications Use the application form that you can download from the Center’s homepage (http://www.bfri.bunka.ac.jp/) to apply. Attach the application and mail to the Center. Screening Criteria Screening joint researches applied will take the following items into consideration: (1) Connected with a theme corresponding to the Center’s expectations. (2) Possibility of achieving research results each year during the research period. (3) Possibility of development of new fashion and clothing culture research. (including the expectation for improvement of research in quality areas such as classification, preparation and rearrangement of research data and information, etc.) (4) Possibility of contribution toward stimulating research internationally. 12.
