Landman Courses – For Credit or Non‐Credit – Offered by TJC – Fall Semester, 2008 1. OIL AND GAS LAW – Location: TJC West Campus, aka RTDC If taken for college credit ‐ 3 lecture hours a week; 0 lab hours. Credit: 3 If taken for noncredit, students will be awarded a certificate showing contact hours. Instructor: Jim Williams, attorney‐at‐law and former landman Required Text: Oil and Gas Law and Taxation by Hemingway ISBN: 0‐314‐14705‐54e. Recommended Text: Landman's Field Manual. Sample Reports, Forms, and Procedures. Both texts will be available for sale at the first class. Course description: This course presents the fundamental concepts of oil and gas law including the relationship between landowners and oil and gas operators, government regulation, and documents used in the industry. Prerequisite: None End‐of‐course outcomes: The student will define and properly use terminology relating to oil and gas law; locate, describe, and analyze sources of law relating to oil and gas law; and draft documents commonly used in oil and gas law. The Oil/Gas Law class will be offered on Monday evenings from 6:00‐8:40 p.m. at the West Campus. First class will be Monday, August 25; last class will meet Monday, December 8. 2. TITLE EXAMINATION AND DEED PLOTTING – Location: TJC Main Campus If taken for college credit ‐ 2 lecture hours + 2 lab hours each week. Credit: 3 If taken for noncredit, students will be awarded a certificate showing contact hours. Instructor: Ben Robertson, owner of Smith Co. Title Required Text: Handout materials will be provided. (Students may need an Allen scale or other items ‐‐ I'll have to find out about that.) Course Level: Introductory Course Description: Prepares students to perform deed research of tracts of land to determine land titles and prepare run sheets of prior and current ownership. Includes methods of interacting with private citizens and public agencies, use of topographic maps, historical data, and deed references. Prerequisite: For landman training only. End‐of‐course Outcomes: Research historical deed records of a tract of land; utilize industry‐specific (Deed Plotter) software to construct a deed sketch; collect boundary line evidence of a large tract of land using topographic maps. Prepare a run sheet of prior and current ownership. The Title Examination and Deed Plotting class will be offered on Monday evenings from 5:45‐9:15 p.m. in room T‐ 118 on the main TJC campus. First class will be Monday, August 25; last class will meet Monday, December 8. If students want college credit for either one of these classes, they must be enrolled at TJC. For students who do not want college credit, registration date for the above classes begins August 1, 2008. Call 903‐510‐2900 on August 1 to register over the phone. Both credit and noncredit students will be in the same classroom, and both are responsible for doing the assigned work and taking the tests. Continuing Education Credits: ETAPL will apply to AAPL for Continuing Education Credits for CPL’s, RPL’s and RL’s.
