What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering? I was mostly inspired by
my dad who used to teach some technical classes in high school while I was
growing up. He would bring all of his work home and we often had little robots
rolling around. He’s also the one who pushed me to try computer science when
I was unsure of what university to go to.

Can you share a memorable project or achievement from your career that
you're particularly proud of? My promotion to Senior Software Engineer II is
the proudest achievement of my career so far. I believe I’m the first woman
at Accusoft to reach that level and be considered an architect at the
company so it meant more than just receiving a promotion.

Can you share some of the challenges you've faced as a female engineer, and
how you overcame them?
One significant challenge I have faced as a female engineer is an internal one.
Often, I have found myself as the sole woman on engineering teams, both at
Snowbound and now at Accusoft. While my teams have always been supportive
and I thoroughly enjoy collaborating with my coworkers, I struggled with imposter
syndrome for a considerable part of my career. I doubted the value of my ideas
and opinions, which led to a period where I rarely voiced my thoughts.
However, with time and the unwavering encouragement of my manager at the
time (thank you, Sean!), I gradually gained confidence in my work and abilities.
This support and the increasing hands-on experience I had in different parts of
the product were instrumental in helping me overcome my self-doubt. Today, I
am able to acknowledge when I am unsure about something, confidently saying, “I
don’t know,” and embracing the opportunity to learn and grow.

Gareth Thomas is a well-known rugby star who is also recognized as a pioneer of the LGBT+
community. Thomas commonly speaks to being the first openly gay professional rugby union
player, being gay in a predominantly male sport while overcoming hurdles and breaking the
stigma surrounding HIV positive.
To hear more about Gareth Thomas’s story, watch here.
Marsha “pay it no mind” Johnson was a self-identified drag queen and a prominent gay liberation
activist. She was a veteran of the Stonewall Riots and was one of whom many say helped start the
riot the morning of June 28, 1969. Johnson became an active member of many of the groups that
proliferated after Stonewall, such as the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) that fought for the protection
and sexual liberation of all people. Knowing the hardships of living on the streets, she co-founded
Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with GLF member, Sylvia Rivera. STAR provided
homeless and transgender individuals with shelter and community.
James Baldwin was an essayist, novelist, playwright, poet, and social justice advocate, best
known for voicing his concerns around identity, creativity and freedom. Baldwin’s work
considered what it meant to be human and explored our everyday struggles, victories, and
defeats during one of the most turbulent times for blacks in America. Some of his writings include
“Notes of a Native Son” and “Go Tell It on the Mountain.”
The month of June is recognized as Pride Month. June was chosen due to the Stonewall Riots that occurred in
1969. The riots were prompted by a raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn, a gay club, in Greenwich Village,
Manhattan. In 1969, same sex relations were illegal in New York. As a result of this, some places served as a
center of refuge where LGBT individuals could go to express themselves openly and socialize without worry. On
June 28th, 1969, police officers entered Stonewall Inn, arressting 13 individuals, causing hundreds to riot that day
followed by thousands throughout the next week. The Stonewall Riot was a leading force for LGBT political
activism.
RuPaul Charles is a drag queen who has brought the niche art of drag into the mainstream. In the
90’s, RuPaul released his hit single "Supermodel (You Better Work)." He is also known for his
appearances in "Crooklyn," "The Brady Bunch Movie," and "Blue in the Face." In 2009, he started a
drag queen competition show titled "RuPaul's Drag Race." Over the years, the series has gained
momentum and has become a major hit for mainstream audiences.
