By using existing fiber in the neighborhood, Qwest reaches within 4,000 feet of a customer’s location, which allows the VDSL technology to deliver speeds of 26 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream. At the neighborhood, signals are converted and sent via ATM and MPEG2 technology through the existing telephone copper wire network. Whole House Digital Solution: At the home, a Qwest Digital Gateway Box interconnects Qwest Choice TV & OnLine to individual television sets, personal computers, telephones and audio equipment to achieve a “whole house digital solution.” The Digital Gateway eliminates the need for additional set-top boxes and cable modems. This translates into a truly ‘last mile’ broadband network for voice, video and high-speed Internet services. Customers can access a variety of state-of-the-art features through the Digital Gateway, including: • 100% digital television programming • Discounted movie packages • Pay-Per-View movies and events • Digital stereo music • Very High Speed DSL • Parental control security • On-screen Qwest Caller ID • Qwest Voice Messaging indicator light+ The Digital Gateway differs from traditional set-top boxes in that traditional cable boxes are designed to deliver one video and audio channel to just one TV/VCR at a time. The Digital Gateway, however, functions like three digital set-top boxes and a high-speed modem in one. It delivers multiple video/audio streams simultaneously.
