Department of Defense to Honor 15 Employers from Across the Nation for Support of National Guard and Reserve September 15, 2010 03:57 PM Eastern Daylight Time ARLINGTON, Va.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense agency, will honor 15 employers from across the nation with the 2010 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their outstanding support of employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve, the Freedom Award is given to employers from large business, small business and the public sector. The annual awards will be presented on September 23, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. First presented in 1996, 2010 marks the 15th anniversary of the presentation of the Freedom Award to the nation’s most supportive employers. This year’s honorees range from a small printing business in Tennessee, to a local police department, to major pharmaceutical and retail corporations, to the State of Hawaii. The recipients will be honored by senior Department of Defense officials during the 2010 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award ceremony. Almost one-half of the total U.S. military strength is comprised of the Guard and Reserve. The Department of Defense shares these citizen warriors with their civilian employers, many of whom provide significant support to their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. This year almost 2,500 Guard and Reserve members, or their family members, from across the country nominated employers for exceptional support. Ceremony guests will include members of Congress, senior military officials and the Guard and Reserve members who nominated the recipients for the award. In conjunction with the ceremony, the Freedom Award honorees will meet privately with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates following a breakfast hosted by Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs Dennis McCarthy and the ESGR National Chair, Mr. James Rebholz.
